Just interested to know your thoughts on car insurance. I come from an era where you would not consider anything less than comprehensive car insurance, as part of the total cost of car ownership. I've never been uninsured or used third-party property only, so would be love to hear from those that do and get away with it, as well as those that have been burnt.
Also, there are so many nice cars out there but most of the nicer models are difficult and expensive to insure, so I was wondering if many people actually risk driving say, high performance Japanese imports, WRXs, etc., without comprehensive insurance?
Thanks to all who participate in the poll and thread.

Different companies have different policies with regards to mods, check with the company you are with.
My VN is Third party. Cost me $1000, looks like crap, but I look after it well. Total cost to insure = $187 a year.
For me, anything over $4000 I would comprehensively insure. The only problem I see is justifying it. I would not want to spend more than $1500 a year on insurance.

I would never drive uninsured cause what happens if you hit a $100,000 BMW or fall asleep at the whell and drive through a shop front or hit a kid running onto the street. these are the thing that bomb (3rd party) insurance covers your ass for. i cant justify haveing full comp on my car purely because to full comp would cost me half as much as the car is worth every year so its just un economical. i have bomb plus (3rd party fire and thieft) on my car. last year when i rolled dads old towing car (74 rangie converted to 4 door with a chev V8 ) it only had 3rd party so we didnt get a pay out cause no other car was involved. but to insure that vehical full come would have cost us about $1700 pa when the car only cost us $2000 so you cut your losses plus we have be able to pawn off alot of the good gear left in the car and nearly made up the $2000 (your be supprised what a quick sandblast and lick of paint does for resale on driveline parts)

Komodo, If you hit a person then they are coverd by your registration as that includes 3rd party bodily injury & death.
I personally am insured for 3rd party, property (upto $2million), fire and theft (upto $5000)
as my car is worth $2000 tops then there is no reason for me to have fully comp. If i hit another car, there car is coverd and I just buy another cheap car. If my car is stolen or burnt out then I get the value of the car. also being under 25 it works out best this way.

I've got the same as Slider - works best for me... Having a car worth under 5,000 makes it worth it, and I am a careful enough driver that I'm FAIRLY sure if I do have a stack, it'll be fairly minor. Besides, its costs stuff all to repair a commodore!!

I've got comprehensive insurance with Elders, it cost me $200ish bucks per year because it is tied in with the family buisness but insured and owned by myself. It beats the #2k just car wanted to charge me.

I am comprehensively insured...
On my VL it just wasn't worth it so i just had 3rd party property, the car was worth about $3500...
If the car is worth $5000 or more then i want comprehensive.
If you can't afford comprehensive for the car (i.e: imports etc) you can't really afford the car.

Comprehensive, yeap insurance costs a fortune... It be crazy to drive around with anything less than 3rd party.
To answer the question if many ppl risk no insurance with imports etc, I know afew guys that do risk it be it they cant get comp insurance or its too expensive. I find it insane they happy to spend $50k on a car and not willing to spend $3k~ ayear on insurance.
OR the attitude, "I'm a good driver, I won't have an accident thats my fault"
Even if you do have an accident thats not your fault, a lot of the times the 2 insurance companies will battle it out to decide who's at fault. When its you VS the other persons insurance company it can make things a lot harder.

I have full comp on mine, but if its a cheapo I don't think it is worth it.
I know some ppl with imports who cant afford the full comp and just take the risk.
I agree with you dr evil on that one.
Or you could be like ned flanders and think insurance is a form of gambling.

If you're going to pay for a decent car, you'd have to be completely crazy to not put comprehensive insurance on it! Comprehensive is very expensive especially if you're young and drive a sporty car....
It's better to be safe then sorry isn't it?
As for voiding your insurance...your best bet is to talk to your insurance company before you do the mods, because if you have an accident and you haven't informed them of any mods, it could well mean that you are no longer covered by their insurance and you've got a massive bill in front of you.

no ned i would have to disagree
NOT insuring is taking a gambe
Insurance is a good thing (ignoring the fact that insurance companies are there to make money, and are often vigulant in doing so)
It is a way of spreading the cost of car crash/theft etc... to all of society so that no-one has too pay huge damage bills etc
