hey everyone i just bought my first car a starlet off a mate really cheap, i'm talking about the 97 .. i luv it as a first car i just want to get a good sound quality and a decent volume .. i'm considering using the factory deck (cd player) along with a david navone line output convertor to convert the speaker level signal to RCAs up to 9v. i want to run it to a 2 channel phoenix gold tantrum amp, and i can't afford a subwoofer at the moment so i'd like to use 6 or 6.5" drivers .. i like the sound of Alpine Rs and Focal though i can't remember which model (costs the same as the Alpine Rs).

okay so here are my questions -
1. the speakers i'm considering are focal, alpine rs, diamond audio m6 for this price range can i get better value ?
2. how do i fit large speakers in the doors of the starlet they seem quite thin, i'm going for a bit of sq so i'll need to work out where to mount the tweeter too .. i'm not really confident with going the kick-panel option !
3. how much power does the amp need to produce per channel .. i'm thinking about a 250.2 which is about 2x60w at 14.4v i think .. i was also considering the jaycar 2x150w for more head room but i think the sq will suffer because it's a jaycar .. trying to work out the best option for my money ..

biggest problem is i guess .. speaker type, installation of 6" drivers and necessary rms power requirements

any suggestions ? thank u ...

oh the other option is just to get some good quality 4" coax speakers for the stock locations, i know this will sound a lot better, but -- i'd rather have a bit of bass in the front ..

little confused, please help !

It's always good to have a 6" set up front, particularly if you have no sub.......

I'd be inclined to get the PG amp: it's a quality unit that you can use in many applications in your car for future install incarnations. Not saying Jaycar is terrible, but I know what I'd choose.

40-60 watts is more than enough for the average "user" with a half decent set of front speakers. It will get heaps loud, I promise you!

Thin doors? Make sure you put some $$$ and effort into sound deadening them! With the micro-thin trims and door panels in the new(ish) small cars, this is something that will really assist in making your choice of speakers sound their best.

hey thanks for clearing up some of my queries about power and speaker size .. i'll try to go for the 6" speakers ..

oh yeah i forgot to mention that i'll be deadening the doors, yeh definately wanna do that .. however the reason i mentioned that the doors are thin is because i'm not sure how to go about mounting a 6" driver in the door due to possible lack of depth ?

i heard that the best spot for speakers in the doors is high and as far back (away) from the occupants as possible, in other words, as close to the mirrors as possible .. is that correct ? and if so where can the tweeter go ?

If you have the time I'd look at kick pannel installs for your speakers.

kick panels are fun to do, if you have room smile.gif

Are the current front speakers located inside the dash? If so then I would say building a "door" speaker on the starlet will be as difficult as getting a kick panel done.
