Full Version: Is mixing drivers worth the risk?

Hey all,

I'm in need of a new front stage. Something with good SQ, strong midbass and decent power handling as i do like to crank it up sometimes. I was considering a dyn or morel 3 way set, but after having a few mechanical issues with my car, i dont think i'll be able to stretch the budget that far. Even a 2 way dyn or morel elate set is a little out of my current price range.

Im thinking about getting a pair of these, some morel MT23's (or similar) and building a custom passive crossover, with the possibility of adding the morel midrange driver and the morel 3 way crossover later on when my budget's a bit healthier.

Is it worth a try or am i better off just grabbing something like the alpine type x 6.5's?

DD 6.5 mids go for ~$250ea.

bit pricey, but i imagine would kill the Jaycars (so they should for 3 times the price???)

Probably, but they're a bit out of my price range. I did consider them, but once i buy tweeters and components for the crossover, the price would be roughly the same as the dyn 240mk2 or the two way elate 6 set, and it would still be a gamble. :?

i reckon you might as well just wait and save up for something you're going to be happy with. If you do however end up mixing up the front stage and building / buying crossovers keep us posted on how it sounds.

Good luck mate!

Just had a thought, why dont you buy something cheaper but okay for the moment and then use them as rear fill later on when your wallet recovers a little. If you buy some splits you can always use the woofer and x-over without the tweets in the back later.

Save $90 an buy the Morel DD splits for $250
Remember these kevlar drivers come as a single unit son once you buy two you would have spent $158
