I need to get a small tweeter for my a-pillars to be used as ambient speakers. I will cut it off at around 10K. Do i still need to get good tweeters for this or would anything suffice (much like rearfill speakers).
my main speaker set is Dynaudio 340GT (3-way)to be placed in kickpanels. I need the extra tweeter for "height".
Also, would it be better to place the tweeter high on the a-pillar (which however would make it nearer to the driver) or below (further but nearer to the windshield)
Thanks
my full system: (excluding the planned ambient tweeter)

I was going to suggest Morel Supremos until I read "small tweeter"
Perhaps move the Dyn's to the A-pillars and investigate if you can fit Supremos in the kicks. Should have enough room in an Escape?
Nice system design btw

Well since you haven't installed them yet I wouldn't be worring about ambient tweeters. Less is more.

most of the cars ive heard using kickpanels here have problems with their stage height.
by the way, would getting the morel supremos and using it as my main tweeter (in the kickpads) and the small dynaudio tweeter on the a-pillar as ambient tweeter, be good idea?
Will the supremos blend in with the dyna?

either way would be good, no such thing as right or wrong. if it works then i'd love for someone to say it's wrong

supremos and dyn's have a rather different sound... IMO the supremos will add some bite to the top end, that the dyn's are lacking... especially when you put the tweeters in the kicks, they'll be even softer...
i've got supremo's on my dash (as ambients) HP'd at 8Khz 12db/oct My focals were a little dry, the supremos helped to add some sizzle. They also raised and widened the soundstage!

would making the supremos my ambients too be a better idea by putting it in my dash? or should i stick to putting it in the kicks then have my dynaudio MD100 be the ambient tweeter in my a-pillar or dash? what would you recommend?
Mr_Bob
Aug 24 2004, 09:05 AM
supremos on the dash...
you want a tweeter that'll play into the 15-20Khz region, as there are still imaging cues up there... from memory the dyn's start rolling off around 10-12Khz

I was originally planning this:
JL12w6v2 (rear) - below 60
dyna midbass MW160(doors) - 60-600
dyna mids MD140(kicks) - 600-2.5K
Morel Supremos (kicks) - from 2.5K - 20K
dyna tweeter MD100(a-pillar) - from 10K-20K

Why not look at a CDT StageFront kit?
In-line passive xovers plus the tweeters so you can make adjustments at the xover for attenuation and high-pass to tailor the ambients to the Dyn's.

If you can't find a dealer I can hook you up with the distributor for a dealer.
Would be cheaper than Supremo's as well....
Mr_Bob
Aug 24 2004, 09:17 AM
yeah most tweeters will be cheaper than the supremo's
i wouldn't put the supremos in teh kicks and the dyn on the dash...
if you're after a tweeter that'll compliment the dyns nicely, but is smaller than the supremos
the Phass AT20 would suit you...
(outer rim is 50mm)

But i wouldnt want to give up the supremos. They do sound very nice right? Why is it that all of a sudden, i feel that you are discouraging me from using the supremos... ???

:?
i highly recommend supremo's as ambient tweeters!
IMO the md100's won't be very good as ambient tweeter.
(edit: just remember you're already running active

)
i only recommended the Phass tweeters, as they are 1/2 the diameter of the supremo tweeters, and it sounded as though size was an issue.
where are you located?
wanna listen to my car, and see the difference my ambient supremo's make?

just use another md100 dyn tweeter
its THE best way of doing this...however i suggest less tweeters is TRULY better
id stick with single pair of tweeters in the kicks or move them to the dash where the windshield meets the A pillar. Almost have the tweeters firing forward and not crossfired (crossfired is just horrible). WIth that said i have heard one car using A pillar setup and it actually ALMOST imaged...wow i was surprised.

moving the tweeters from the kickpads would mean moving the tweeters away from the midrange. Wouldnt result to horrible music? I think it would be too far away
Mr_Bob - im from the philippines so i guess i wont be able to hear your setup. Thanks for the offer though =)

Aug 24 2004, 11:26 AM
yeah i think you'd have a noticable seperation if you moved your main tweeters to the dash, and left your midranges in the kickpanels.
i once had my midranges in the doors, and my tweeters in the kicks, and there was noticable seperation....
phillipines? yeah.. that's a bit too far for me to drive!

darn, you guys are giving me a headache. I have to rethink again where to put my supremos. hehehe. I really want to have the supremos as ive heard tons of good things about them and for another fact that, i would be the ONLY one here in the philippines to have them. hehehe.
Im really figuring out if i can put the supremos in the dash as you have mentioned but after looking at my dash again, i really doubt if i can have it fit there. It would really need to go in the kicks along with my midrange.
I will just hope that my MD100 would be able to be a good ambient tweeter....
By the way, what are you using to drive the supremos? how many watts do you think it should need to sound nicely?
i plan on using an audison 2x130 at 4ohms on it (but seeing that its 6 ohms, it would mean that the amp will only be giving it around 2x97.5watts RMS. right?
would that be good enough to make the supremos sweet sounding?

If you are definete about having ambient tweeters, and the supremos are two large but you still want something unique talk to the guys at Arvus (
www.worldsbestspeakers.com).
Mr_Bob
Aug 24 2004, 11:53 AM
i'm only using 2X50WRMS to power them, but because i'm using them as ambients i don't need much power.
although they're 6ohm tweeters, i find they're pretty sensitive. they're rated for 150WRMS power handling from memory...
i took the front plate of the tweeters, which reduced them from 4" diameter to 3", but they need to mount from behind now. i mount them using the 3 allen bolts that use to hold the face on...

i want something unique - and thats the supremos. I plan to use the dynaudio MD100 as my ambient speaker because i already have it.

Aug 24 2004, 12:03 PM
mr bob - do you have pics of how you mounted your supremos? Isnt it that if you removed the front plate, the sound of the tweeters will change?
Mr_Bob
Aug 24 2004, 12:06 PM
not at present, but i have been meaning to take some photos...
i'll see what i can do tonite and hopefully i can post them tomorrow!
i was warned that the dispersion would be affected, but it doesnt' seem to have been.
although the bracket that they were mounted to, is aluminium and has been rounded in, similiar to the face plate.

are dynaudio MD100 tweeters really that bad such that it wont do good as an ambient tweeter? darn. It would be a waste not to use them and cost me more $$$ to buy another tweeter. Isnt there a workaround for the MD100 so that itl perform nicely as an ambient tweeter? I have an equalizer which can tune it. maybe thatl help....

got a frequency response graph including off axis responses?
it might be rated for up to 30Khz, but i'm pretty certain they taper off considerably, i could be wrong though...
even the supremo's aren't flat that high, i needed +4db of boost at 20Khz.

The frequency response graph can be located here:
http://www.dynaudiousa.com/products/car/dr...drivers/100.htm
Is that bad? also i have it hooked up on an equalizer. I can give it a boost if needed. (i would be using the rear input/output on the equalizer for my ambient tweeter)
