Full Version: Tuning sub for best sq response

Hey guys,

I have begun the dubious task of fine tuning my sub (ts-w12prs). Specs are:
Freq. response (15-2000Hz)
Qtc: 0.38
Currently facing backwards in boot

Settings I have to work with are (JL 500/1):
Low pass filter (50-200Hz) (12/24db slope)
Parametric eq (variable Q, boost, center frequency)
Infrasonic filter (15-100Hz)

Basically what I'm looking for is tight, clean bass response with even transients across the spectrum. Anyone who has had experience for this sub (or any sq sub for that matter): advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, from Mike.

Easiest way to "tune" is to play with the low-pass settings on your amp, and keep jumping in and out of the drivers seat between tweaking. Try to integrate it with your Kenwood splits and if necessary, adjust the dials on your Sony amp. Also consult your JL and Sony deck's manuals and read up on their features and settings, and how flexible they are.

Then if you are still not happy, get into different box designs.

don't get me wrong, I'm MORE than happy with the sub, but I want to get the most out of it...

as for integrating it properly with the rest of my system: that's another issue. At the moment I'm just trying to optimise the response from the sub.

p.s. is there anyone in the hunter valley who tunes systems and/or has a RTA (real-time analyser)

hmm. don't see too many of these subs about. what you think? whats rec retail on one of them?

cheers

If you could provide more info it would help some.

Qtc is the Q of the driver loaded into an enclosure.
Do you mean Qts?
Qms and Qes figures plus Vas and Fs would be useful specs if you have them.

Most likely with a Pioneer sub.....they usually work pretty well in smallish sealed enclosures around 1 cu ft.

The JL amp is a great thing (I have one myself) will drive it nice and tight and clean

RRP $800, got mine for $650. Yeah I think a lot of people would prefer to buy a European/American brand for that kind of money which is why you don't see too many around sad.gif

OK, here are all the technical figures:

Revc: dual 3.6ohm
Levc: 0.4 milli Henry
Zmax: 43.8 ohm
Fs: 24Hz
Qms: 9
Qes: 0.41
Qts: 0.39
Vas: 93L (3.3cu.ft)
Rms: 2.3 (N.S/m)
Mms: 135g
Cms: 3.15*10^-4 (m/N)
Diam: 9.5 inch
Sd: 70.9 (sq. in)
BL: 9.73 (T.m)
Xmax: 13.5 mm
Hvc: 39.5mm
Hag: 12mm

Hope that's enough stats

no i've read reviews of it (marty price did one in incar a while back) but wondering what you think...

i've never heard one

Well facing backwards will give you more bass loading - and so the SPL may go up a notch. But in my experience, backwards firing sounds more 'muffly' - but different cars may give you different results - so whichever sounds better to you.

What do you mean by tuning - if you're talking about getting a flat response - you really need to fine yourself an RTA and
(1) see what point your mid bass drivers start to drop off
(2) set your sub 's high pass Hz near to where your mid bass drivers start to drop off
(3) adjust your parametric eq for the sub to give a give a flatter response...

Its one of the most accurate and musical subs I have ever heard: plays complex bass guitar work without a hitch and never loses the punch of the bass drum during the whole thing.

I'd have to say its only weakness is its power handling (300 watts r.m.s) at the moment I have it connected to t he Jl 500/1 but I'd prefer not to push my luck smile.gif

Mind you, for my current system it can go louder than I want it to (the car frame distorts before the sub starts clipping so I've never pushed it to its limits)...has a 92dB efficiency :!:

I'm seriously thinking about getting another one (after I buy some DLS iridiums for Xmas)

I like the look of this woofer.
Will load into 40 litres sealed box for a .707 alignment. You could use a bit less, say 30 litres-ish.
I reckon I would prolly use 35 litres.

Power handling is its short suit and the smaller enclosure size would help some.

I would use the subsonic filter set at 25-30Hz. The excursion gets a bit crazy under 30Hz on this woofer.
But it should work pretty well imo.
