Full Version: Multiple Midbass Driver front stage question

Hi all,

I am considering a bit of a shuffle with my front stage, having 2 midbass drivers per side, namely a pair of 7" Dynaudio MW160 drivers with Esotar Tweet and X280 crossover per side.

My question is whether running multiple midbass drivers using the normal crossover has a negative effect on sound quality.

Obviously the impedance will be different, and I know Dynaudio crossovers are impedance matched to suit the 8 ohm tweets. Because of this I have been hesitant to try it.

Will it adversely effect and aspect of sound quality???

Thanks, Dan.

Yes it will sound pretty average.

Changing the impedence of the woofer output on teh crossover will completely change the crossover frequency, this will effect the crossover frequency dramatically. Doubling the frequency infact.

Also have two sources of sound at a frequency of 3000hz will be extreme hard to get imaging right etc.

Your best bet would be to use two 6.5inch woofers up to 400hz and run the dyn mid range to playing from 400hz to where the tweeter plays.

Go for a custom pasive x-over or an active x-over and you will be fine.

daniel..

you are thinking the same plan i thought of, and nearly went thru with..

I have a set of 240GT splits, and was gonna add an extra midbass (mw160gt) per side, run active.. the LRx2.500 i have was gonna run the midbass @ 20hm (350wrms a side) and use the LRx2.250 to run the tweeters..
it was a good idea, but wont work..

i had lengthy discussions with Marty (fhrx) about this and 1 thing you have to consider with 2 midbass's playing up to 2500Hz is CANCELLATION.. your best bet would be go get a dedicated midrange or just drop the whole idea.. it might sound like a good idea on paper, to compete with the sub bass (in my case with 2000+wrms of bass) and have some more kick up front, but it will be very hard to get the imaging right..

Dont go there seems like the best advice. The only possible way to do it properly would be to actively High pass one and make it dedicated midrange, and then Band pass the other and make it a dedicated mid bass. This would work well but would require and extra pair of amp channels and an amp ot active Xover that could bandpass signal to the midbass drivers.

If you do this and have both drivers mounted in door then use front for midrange and the other more rearward one as the midbass, This will result in least compromise to staging and imaging etc

Fair enough.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah the general response has been what I was afraid of, just wanted to confirm.

I have some other ideas that all involve more tried and true methods, so to the scrap heap with this one.

Thanks, dan.
