Full Version: Ideal speaker placement?

Hi all,

My front stage consists of Dynaudio esotar tweets and MW160 7". In trying to determine the best locations for the speakers, I am a bit uncertain.

Keeping in mind that the crossover point of the x280 crossovers is 2300Hz, would I be better off placing the tweets in the a pillars in custom mounts, and have the MW160s on axis in the doors/kicks. Or am I better off having the tweets in the kicks and the 7s in the doors.

I know there is a great divide between those who like A pillar/dash mounted speakers and those who do not, and if I were using a 3 way setup I would be more certain.

If I have the tweets in the kicks, the mids will block them a bit if mounted on axis in the doors.

If the tweets were in the kicks and the mids were mounted in the doors, but not on axis, would this sound crap?

If the tweets are in the A pillars and the mids on axis in the doors, am I going to have huge separation, or due to the lowish crossover point, will this sound reasonably smooth?

Any opinions/advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Dan.

i loved the tweeters with the 5uf cap

2.3khz @ 12db/oct hmmm...id personally go first order for that tweeter

we did a couple of home driver setups with this tweeter and used a 6db/oct 5uf cap. This worked extremely well. Tweeter is 8ohms so that worked out approx to be about 4khz

one car i was impressed with overseas used 6db/oct passive x-over Apillar install (soft dome with low res point) and a 6.5inch mid slightly angled in the door.

personally id go kickpanel install with mid in the door. With this setup you can get the mid and tweeter very close together and make the soundstage more continuous.

I do agree with you there Jas. unfortunately though I will either have to sacrifice on axis mounting for the mid, or sacrifice clear pathways for the tweets with a kick/door setup.

Apparently even slightly off axis response for most dyn drivers is quite good, so maybe mounting the mid at about 60 degrees might work out alright.

Incidently Jas, how did the car sound that you heard with the esotar in the a pillar?

the tweeters were not esotars but they were a 28mm soft dome with i think res freq about 700hz

they used 6db/oct x-overs

german brand i heard in car @ the 2001ces @ alexis park hotel

can not remember the brand but they sounded great and it was a very very simple system. I think rrp usd was $1200 for the set sad.gif

sounded excellent and they had the tweeter firing directly out from the a pillar , which i have never been able get my system to sound remotely ok with that design. HOwever i never got the chance to use the esotars in my car sad.gif and i guess these would have been even better than what i heard in the usa.

daniel goood luck with the setup

i know its definitely going to be a challenge

BTW why are these tweeters sooo big!!!
