I know that a lot of factors contribute to having a good sounding system like speaker placement / speaker / tweaking and the like but lets say that everything else is equal, what would you (your own subjective preference) choose among the given amplifiers if you would compete in an SQ event.

so, esentially, you should've named your poll "your favourite sq amp" as opposed to "the best sq amp"
i love halcro power amps, and they're some of the most expensive and desirable amps in the world, but i wouldn't ever call them "the best". perhaps the rockport turntable. stereophile A+ component for how long??!! still not "the best"
theres no such thing. :x

You would probably not hear any differences in sound with most of those amps! They are all good! Also there is no best amp.

djhatton - i get your point as we all know that the term "BEST" is a subjective term and it not only applies to car audio in its subjectivity aspect but also in ALL the things which we would desribe as "best".
However, i believe that using this "best" term without condoning to its philosophical nature, would be more than enough to project to users who post here the intent which i meant when using the said term.
Lets not get into arguing if what i shouldve used is the term "best" or "favourite" as i dont want this thread to become a discussion of what should be or shouldnt be. Good day bro.
I hope no offense was taken. =)

Having said that i wouldnt say no to TRU, Zapco or Brax either
Am i correct in thinking that Krell are considered the 'most high end' amp on the market, or are there even more esoteric/expensive options (not counting backyard manufacturers who claim some BS magic amp topology or the like)?

in the other forums, Brax is leading with 16 votes followed by Mcintosh with 13 then Zapco with 10 votes. Audison only has 7 votes, genesis & sinfoni - 6 votes then Tru Technology with 4.
While here, the ones that are leading are McIntosh and Tru Technology.
Interesting. Brax only has 1 vote. Is this because of availability issues?

both come with hefty price tags though, and limited power output!

krell would be up there in terms of home hifi yes but there are many others
as stated before "halcro" an australian company is very widely regarded as manufacturer of some of the best pre and power amps
mark levinson maybe also
theres heaps of others n ones i havent heard of either
in terms of car phoenix gold gets my vote and its not even up there!!

it is not fair to judge like that...
1.have u heard all the amp before?
2.have u heard all the amp in the same car?
3.have u heard all the amp with the same component?
4.have u heard all the amp with the same song?
all the poll is just based on reputation, advertisement, personal judging and image of the product....
the poll does not represent the real nature of each amp and the real SQ of each amp...

Krell make car amps now? Dear god
I know Levinson dabble in this area too, the Lexus LS430 has one of their systems as an option.
Oh and the person that mentioned Halcro was definately on the money. Stereophile rate them as the best amplifiers in the world. Bar none.

Maybe because some people know that Brax is made by the same people that make certain other amplifiers...

i have indeed been privaleged enough to experence a halcro pre-power (with musical fidelity nuvista SACD and sonus fabre grand amatis). indeed it is, to date, the best system i've ever heard.... "best" :hehe:
i voted for the brax. i heard an x1200 in a home-hi-fi rep's car and i was hugely impressed.
there's heaps of highend stuff out there... a/d/s, arc audio, diamond, dls, milbert, u-dimmension etc etc.... but yeah, i feel any/all of the amps in the list would sound nice in any system.

if someone said i am going to give you the flagship amp from any of those companies, and the only condition is that you must put it in and then i will tell you which one of them made it would anyone here say no?
They all are amazing amps...

Sep 13 2004, 10:14 AM
imho, in the same class, i.e. class A, B, AB, or else, power amps have their own characteristics.
They will produce different kind of "s0m3tH1n6" due to their nature. Someone will love it but other hate that. It's exactly just like we talk about speaker such as eton, morel, focal, dyns, etc. They all have their own natures and characters.
Generally the more expensive the PA is, it will produce better sound, but in some cases it doesn't improve the total SQ, or even worsening it when you integrate that thing into your system.
In different scenarios, my ears are just cannot keep up with the difference

should rename this poll "which amp has the best reputation on CAA"
i think there's a high correlation between people's ranting and raving about an amp ..and the number of people that believe it's the best amp in the world.

what model is your milbert amp and how much did you get it for?
heimerich
Sep 17 2004, 07:54 PM
Depends on what driver do you use... some driver work well with AUDISON but some sound better with Butler... Each amp has different characteristic that can't be judge by "THE BEST SQ AMP"... And also, depending on what sort of characteristic do you looking for... Butler is very detail in high frequency but it sounds thin for the mid... Audison works well with Focal but not for Scanspeak... With Scanspeak, ARC Audio is really mellow compare to Audison but then the Audison is warmer than ARC... It really depends on what sort of sound's characteristic are you... Every brands have their own strength... Some installer that is really good with engineered an amp, can create an amplifer better than any of those mentions in the poll...

This has to be the best amp on the market!!!
I mean who really gives a rats ass, 99.99% of people couldn't afford it, and will it really be that noticable that it's the best?[/size]
Will it have "I'm the best of the best of the best amp in the world" written on it? Will your ears be able to tell that this is the best? Will your speakers then be not the best but the worst and have to change them for the best of the best of the best speakers too?

Spot On! Halcro DM-58 power amp is rated the best power amplifier in the word. Perfect match with Sonus Fabre Stradivari. In fact there is many, many more rated much, much better than Krell. Anyway which model Krell we are talking about? Krell have a really impresive one the FPB650s class A solid-state mono block. About the same price as Halcro.
But have to admit DM-58 is so accurate that your source unit must be among the best to pair with it. This amp is a shxt in shxt out kind of amp. Super quite and super accurate. It will sound like shxt if you play your son children CD.
Tru is a much better car amp. They are straight forward basic design with really quality parts. Who will use a high quality RCA female and Kimber kable for internal wiring?
