hey guys,

i've been shopping around auditioning various splits for my new install. Having listened to everything i've been able to around me, the best by far i have heard were the Alpine Type R's. I'm after some opinions on how these compare to the HSK-165's? i've heard nothing but good about the hertz but there is nowhere i can find to audition them around me (SE suburbs, melb).

I really liked the good midbass and the well rounded sound of the Type R's. alot of other splits i've heard had good treble, but crap bass or the other way round.

Just interested in how they compare to HSK's because the HSK's are cheaper! biggrin.gif

thanks!

PS i didn't like the sound of the Boston Rally speakers i heard, they didn't seem to be as clear as the alpines.

Edit: changed title to include other

the HSK's have heaps of midbass, a little muddy but for $300odd for them you wouldet expect them to be perfect, the tweeters can be a little bright and harsh but not to bad

they can also take HEAPS of power biggrin.gif
i dont know where in SE melb you are, but there are a few places that have them, there is melinium car audio in warrigal rd have them, not sure who else down that way.

i usaly have some in my car that your welcome to listen to, but im not sure when there going back in..

Ok so i abit muddy. i like my midbass but i want the sound to be vary clear because i tend to listen to a fair amount of female vocal as well as the usual rock and pop.

I'll have to look up melinium car audio. I'm in beaumaris, which is pretty much at the beach end of warrigal rd.

any other thoughts guys? perhaps another split i should be looking at? i started off looking at the jaycar splits and i've just gone up and up because i wasn't happy with the sound!

cheers

there not that muddy, it's hard to say, you really need to listen to them.
ill let you know once mine are back in and we might be able to organise something biggrin.gif

MB Quart Discus i thought were much better at female vocals than the Hertz, although having owned both, it is definitely down in the midbass section on the the Hertz. THere are heaps of places you can listen to these, try Stylyn in Boronia, CAA sponsor (so min. 10% discount) + they had a huge sale on these (the MB Quarts) not to long ago

If in that price range, check out the Boston Rally splits aswell, they are very nice. but of those two, I like the HSK's much more... Man, I even like the Type S splits more than the Type Rs! laugh.gif

hmmm ok. so it seems the general opinion is that there are better options than the alpine type R.

I'll have to check out the MB Quart and Hertz.
I've already heard the Boston Rally's and wasn't a fan.

oh well. back to the drawing board ! LOL :hehe:

Don't like Type-R's either.

1. too popular and hence the 'cool factor' of owning one, IMO, is very low
2. too much bass, too much treble, sounds rather unrefined for the price range, I think.

I think that my current VDO splits are way better than the Type-R's honestly.

I would have to agree with the others here, the Type R lMO is way way too bright the tweeters stand out like dog's nuts.

There are heaps of splits that could be reccomended arround your budget.

Try these,

Pioneer TSC1653

Infinity Referance 605CS

Both of these have a decent x-over, better than most of the others in the same price range that I have seen. (Hertz, Alpine etc etc)

I really liked some of the CDT splits and Rainbow splits when I got to audition them when I visited a mate's store the base models sounded surprisingly good, however I don't know the prices of theses splits.

All the best in your search for a good entry level set of splits.
