Full Version: Mid to High end amp to run Dynaudios

Hi all,

As the title suggests, I am looking for a new amp/s. My speakers are all dynaudio (splits & subs), and I have been using an Audison VRx, but I need the cash right now.

My new HU is an Alpine, so I was thinking of Alpine amps (namely either MRV 420 or 540), but have heard they are known to induce noise into a system.

Obviously this is a downgrade so I am looking at good quality, but cost effective, amps/brands.

Basically after suggestions of amps that would suit the Dyns well.

Thanks, Dan.

That's hard to beat for that money!

Impossible probably.....

Caliber Z4800 (4x100 watts RMS) would be my recomendation.

The eaduio guys have had personal experience using them with Dynaudio drivers, + they have a reasonably advanced crossover network allowing you to run your speakers fully active if you feel the need.

That caliber amp is a nice looking beast. How much are they?

Is it worth the change for a couple of hundred dollars cash? biggrin.gif

Are you looking to buy new or second hand? Maybe the margin will be a little bigger with second hand gear. biggrin.gif

My preference was second hand as I am trying to save some cash after selling my amp and getting new ones. That does not mean however that I will not consider other options. Basically I am after everyone's opinion on an amp that suits or compliments Dynaudio drivers.

Well, half the reason is to come away from it with a few hundred bucks, the other half is because I do not befieve my current amp will really integrate with the way I am planning to change my setup. So I am considering other options that will be more suited.

We have had excellent results teaming the 240's with our ARC Audio 2100 XXK. 2x100, and $799 rrp. Made in USA and a very smooth, open combo sound wise.

the alpine amps are a great amp for the dosh, but i'm with rttz and hutch here. zapco and arc are certainly the picks.

either way, marty at fhrx will hook a bruvah up smile.gif

cheers

Thanks for the replies everyone. To be honest, I have been considering alpines simply because my new HU and processor will end up being alpine and it would integrate well.

BUT... I have never used alpine amps before so have no idea of their quality or sound characteristic. I have also heard many a time that they can induce noise into a system (alternator whine).

That said, I am open to anything, and will look into the arcs as well.

Any other suggestions???

Thanks, Dan.

I'm not a big fan of the alpine amps. But then again I my opinion is based around the old MRV-F405 amp.

If you are looking second hand quality amps I have a Nakamichi PA304 amp up for sale (actually I have two of them). Price is $500AU each including shipping anywhere in OZ.

Do note they have no internal xovers so may not be suitable for your install unless your headunti has onboard xovers.

Other than the the Caliber z4800 has an RRP of $999NZ but if you talk to the eaudio reps I'm sure they'll help you out.

I'm using a LRx2.500, 200Wrms x 2... Sounds good to me.

Alpine amps are very nice since i have two of them.
I am planning on running a pair of dyns using the 540 bridged so that they are getting 200w RMS. I haven't heard of any alpine amps creating noise. It might have been the install that affects it. A set system will only sound as good as the installation.

The other brand that was think about using was arc audio too. The XXKs are HOT looking amps but since i already had a alpine monoblock, i decided on the 540 as they match very nicely in the boot.

yes, i think the audison LRx series are worth a mention. obviously the same pedigree as your VRx, but cheaper, in a smaller chassis, and not 1ohm stable...but you don't need that.

plenty of good options around these days.

I've got a MRV-T420 in my system and have no problems with any induced noise. I'd say it's more likely the installation than the amp that gives you noise problems.

On the sound - made an improvement over the cheaper amp I was running - but in a direct comparison to an Audison VRx - it's anyone's guess smile.gif

I use a pair of Alpine T-420s and they're awesome. Zero noise
-DJ-
every amp will insert SOME noise. at this level (non-boss/pyle/etc) you're not likely to buy an excessively noisy amp.

DJ, having a 550KB image in you sig is not cool, even though it is damn funny.
