Full Version: What am i hearing???

heya guys, got another question about my setup biggrin.gif

i've noticed that there seems to be some sort of buzzing, or absence of sound??? (which gets quite uncomfortable) when the gain on my amp is at about 3/4 max for the sub, but at 1/2, there's no problem except for the decreased bass sad.gif

as an aside, i've also turned down the gain for the front so it blends with the sub a bit more, so im not yet sure if its coming from the sub or fronts

and this also occurs at a relatively low volume setting on the headunit, say at a bit over 1/3, with loudness off and the eq flat (max volume i've used is 2/3)

am i hearing distortion? interference? or was the volume of the bass just too much (which im sort of doubting)?

Setup:
Pioneer dehp4650
Phoenix Gold Octane R 6.0 coax
Phoenix Gold Octane R 69.0 coax
VDO Dayton PA4600 amp
VDO Dayton QB1200 sub
eggism
could be a few things
1. panels vibrating causing canceling of sound
2. interference ie the resister on your dizzie is rooted

1 happens a bit in my car at med volumes
icacha
your suppose to use the available volume on your deck and if its for eg 50 then use it NOT 10 and the system will max out. set your gain all the way to the left which should be at max voltage in and crank your deck (by the way you will have to turn any other amps down also as you will max them out also) now is the time to adjust your gains so the max volume on the deck is used not the max volume on the amp.
Zereul
lol, i recall Marty telling me that on the h/u it goes "up to about 45 or 46 before things start getting funny" when he did my speakers

max on the h/u is 60, and i've got it at 40 when im driving around

so could the noise or whatever it is be due to the gains being set too high?
MOBASS
Sounds like the gain is too high.

Quite a few of the head units I have encountered lately require the gain on the amp to be set at or near minimum.

Then again your head unit could be distorting at high volumes???

good luck

if by distortion you mean the crackling sound from a square wave, then thats not it??

max voltage is 2.2 from the deck, reading around the forums, sounds unlikely that it'd be anywhere near that at max undistorted volume playing music

and besides, the "noise" occurs even with the deck at low volumes

gains on amp go from 2v to 0.3v

assuming the scale is linear, i would've turned it down from about 0.7 to 1v
MOBASS
Ok does the buzzing or noise occur with the engine on or off??

If only with the engine on does it change pitch when you rev the engine??

gooki
Still sounds like an amp issue. I had a similar noise problem, turned out it only happened when my amp was bridged. Unbridged it ran fine (read noise free).
Zereul
havent tried it with the engine off (i'll try that), but no, it doesnt change pitch when i rev

gooki, which thread are you referring to?
Zereul
tried it with engine on/off (at the more sensitive gain setting)

that buzzing or absence is there

could the H/U be getting some sort of feedback when the gain is set to hight???
get some dead'n'er and give it a nice paint job see if that kills it
check ya box <-- long shot
Fhrx
Bosco, bring it down here so I can take a look at it for you mate.

Who installed the amp and sub?
gooki
"gooki, which thread are you referring to?"

None, just refering to my personal problem i experienced 2 years ago.

PM'd you Marty smile.gif
