Full Version: Subwoofer on the dash

I have seen a number of IASCA winners from around the world put the subwoofer on their dashboard. What will be the benefit of having the sub on the dash over the conventional setup?
jas
that would be my dream too....then id get my boot space back.

one advantage could be with using long throw large xmax subwoofer drivers in the dash as a midbass. Louder / lower distortion over conventional door midbass drivers. With the sub at the front you could either go without midbass drivers (as stated0 or run you midbass and subs at a high cutoff point like 80hz and above.

I find that tuning having a sub in the back you are almost forced to tune to around 50hz to have a non directional sub-bass. This is however midbass and car shape/ subwoofer location dependant.

other main advantage, looks cool and is definitely an install to remember.

These are some of the thing i have slowly been working on. I have had the sub installed for a couple of days. Its pretty different from the normal subs in the boot.

I know, you can always moove you engine to the boot area and install everything in under the bonnet smile.gif problem solved!
DeeCee
Yeah - get an old school Vee Dub and you'd be set. or a Porsche

hey deecee how does it sound? looks great! good to see something new being done
DeeCee
well - i just received my DD6.5s midrange/basses so i haven't set it up fully yet with the vifa tweets.

But the setup i was screwing around with in the car was the vifas, the sony ES mids and the infinity 10" and it was pretty mint. You don't get the perception that bass is comoing from the front.. its right there and its a great sound. If only i wasn't so tied to my AC then i could have binned that and pushed the sub further back. But once i get the car back on the road and everything finished then i reckon its gonna kick ass!

One thing i have heard is the use of 8"s up front to get stereo bass, instead of the mono bass that i currenlty have. I do believe there are benefits from stereo bass - but at the mo, nothing beats having something that pounds a bit up front!
I've had to make a lot of changes to get to where i want - eg moving the HU to the top of the dash, not having a convenient place to shove the headunit, having to do a lot of custom to get the sub in. The first box was a no go.. it was good but ii lost some of the functionality of the AC. The second box is better made and i retain full AC.

Ah.. the things you learn..

Thats some unbelievable work there! dirol.gif Looking forward to the progress pics, post them on the pics section of CAA, or bah, I'll just bookmark the other page.

Cheers

Judges would love it, whether or not psychoacoustics plays a role!
DeeCee
And to think - i've never done a major install before. I've screwed around a bit here and there, but nothing to the extent that i'm doing now. Most people would be happy with splits, and a nice boot, but i'm going ahrd cos i like to build.

I'll shove picutres up when i've finished. Or you can visit NZICEMAG if you want to see progress. I'm working now so i don't have much time to work on the car. But i'll most likey do the weekend warrior thing

It's an addiction mate...

When I first started out I thought I'd be happy with my first system...well that kind of went down the drain.
Then I thought I'd be happy with a new amp and sub....well that went down the drain too.
And now I want to go all out and change the wiring, but no that's not good enough either.
My current plans involve making a false floor and a custom sub-box....

Bloody hell though, it's frustrating! Especially when I really want to listen to the system but can't because the amp is not in and neither is the wiring!
DeeCee
I know how you feel about it being an addiction - i've been into it for 9 years and have just finished being a student. Poor and into an expensive hobby... not a good thing sad.gif

Actually - i did put the project into the showcase.. not much interest really.
golf_bht
I was thinking about doing that too but the installer say it will cost $$$$ of A$ to make one. can't really afford it I am still a student.

r u from Thai?

i understand how bad of being a student. but having an expensive hobby like car audio that can make u more ambitious.
DeeCee
Seriously, if you have the time and can learn how to glass, then all the install costs drop heaps.

I learnt and now am applyinig to different things int he car and around the home. I wouldn't attempt it if i hadn't learnt how to do things before hand - and i learnt off tutorials from the internet.

You also need clear thought processes and to be practical. Helped me figure out how to get round some tricky problems i encountered.
HighPingBastard
Do it yourself....if car audio is your hobby then you gotta be prepared to put in the hard yards!
golf_bht
I have try that out and it work great. be sure that you damp your dash properly to kill the vibration. it really turn my head nuts. when I have to actually have to pull almost everything apart to damp it with the G
Mr_Bob
Artkran, this is the woofer i was talking to you about...
it'll be easier to install on your dash.
i think Chris has ordered some, so you can buy one off him in about a week

SQ is meant to be incredible, but there's none in the country yet to compare.
Chris has 2 to be fitted into his boot!
sensitivity is pretty good too (for a 10")

Here's a point! tongue.gif

Seriously tho, i think the alto subs have real possibilities, very very shallow and specs would indicate they'd sound good (since when has specs counted tho?)
Mr_Bob
hahaha
well hopefully i'll be involved in the company next year, funsd permitting,
but at present i've got too many other financial committments.

it's not so much a shameless plug, as the right product for him!
he wants to have his cake and eat it too, i think this is one of his only options... or a phase linear aliente, but they're not availabel locally.
the blaupunkt equivalent leaves alot to be desired, (in this application anyway)

i think Artkran coudl install this flat on his dash, into the sunken section, and it would be totally stealth! he wouldn't have to worry about parking his car at uni, or uninstalling it all the time! smile.gif

I should have Falstaff 12s in the country next week.

Then some mad fibreglassing of enclosures and we're good to see if these things are up to their reputation.
