Full Version: Ideal speaker placement in kicks

Hi all,

I am ready to rebuild my front stage install and not sure which way to go. I have a bunch if Dynaudio drivers that I am planning to use.

I can have a 2 way front stage setup with 7" in the doors custom mounted on axis, and esotars in the kicks on axis.

I could use the 9.5" as midbass in the doors (slight angle or no angle), 5" and esotar in the kicks in sealed enclosures with enough internal volume. The kicks could either have next to no angle, or they could be on axis (this will be bloody difficult to do but maybe possible, however one speaker will to a degree block the signal path of the other)

I prefer a variant of option 2 (the three way stage), however it would seem that the most sensible way to do this would be with no angle on the speakers.

My question is basically would this sound any good or should I go for a more simple install while concentrating on good angling. Bear in mind that the kicks in my car are very forward and have good separation as the cabin is wide, but the seats are mounted closer to the tunnel than the doors.

The reason for trying the three way setup is simply because I greatly prefer having a good amount of up front bass being strong while not being overbearing.

I have seen and heard installs with both on axis mounted speakers and some with no angles at all, all of which had their merits, so I am just not sure which way will yield the best results.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Dan.

In my opinion a 3 way front end (mid bass in doors, mid/tweet in kicks) is the only way to go, this gives you powerfull tuning options with the x-overs (either active or passive) that should almost eliminate the need for major EQ adjustments to overcome the typical door and kick panel response problems, not to mention time alignment advantages over a 2 way door/kick option.

The 9.5" 3 way option is ideal if you can accommodate it.

You are prolly gonna HP the 9.5" around 250-300Hz so I would think no angling would be necessary (some eq though probably).

Fitting Esotars and 5s in the kicks will be a neat trick though. Some angling is probably going to be required I would have thought.
Test, trial, have another go....

It's a bit of a project, but if you can make it work the rewards would be there.

the 3 way sounds good but u may still want a slight angle to avoid standing waves issues on the 9.5. 15 degrees would be enough thou. The midrange (5) may have internal reflection issues, but deflex or some of the equivalent products would minimise this, as with midrange speakers its not ust about having volume needed. The dyn mid dome gets around these issues nicely, but done right the 5s would be sweet.

After a lot of mucking around I found lobing tweeter worked great with the sys 360, and placement of the tweeter relative to mid was very critical. You will need to do a lot of playing around but the results could be great. I havent played with the gear your using but to me the 3 way would have inherent advantages over the 2 way, so Id tend to go that way.

The 3 way would be a lot more work but would if done right, out perform the 2 way in theory, but as we all know sometimes theory is just that and keepin it simple works too. If I was placing a bet thou it would be on the 3 way but your entering uncharted waters smile.gif

this is the very reason why you have the dyns

looks and sounds like a really big job but i think at the end of the day you will love the 3way setup

good luck
