Looking for entry level (say up to $500) 5.25" (maybe 6") components, with sweet tweeter and a bassy mid - any experiences?
They'll be seeing around 80-90wrms a side
TIA....

Around this price ($500) people will always suggest the Boston Acoustics Rally or Focal (not sure which model though)

Rally's don't exist anymore, they have a NEW range to replace the Rally's which are now known as SL, very very nice might I add...

the morels are quite punchy... that'd be my recommendation...
the Hertz HSK's also have plenty of midbass, and they're well under your budget!

Have a look at the Rainbow Kickbass ones - heard them the other day and was very impressed! For $500 they sounded like $1000 speakers!!! The silk dome was sweet as, very mellow and warm. The kickbass attacked with some serious force.
Give them a go.

Our 6.5 is now available in a componet set, at $599.
They deliver incredible mid-bass, ask Marc, he auditioned a set in his car and was impressed.

I'll need some lov'n from a sledge hammer on my doors to fit the 6.5"ers, I'm looking for a factory finish so they got to stay behind the standard EK civic grilles (oh and I ain't go the funds to do too much modification / custom work)...

the AVI misd that DJ2NV uses are great. they're a meaty 5.25"
not suer about the tweeters, cause i haven't heard them, but i'd be surprised if they will disappoint.
EXPRESS (EL) 5.25" EL130 1pr, HF25T 1pr, XN18EL Xover 1pr, ER130 1pr
oh, and i'm not sure about the price, but i'm pretty sure they'll be within your budget, perhaps even the next model up will be too!

I'll let you on a little secret. In most cars you can move the lower window locating bolt/lug further into the door cavity, giving more depth.
In some cars you need to remove the front window track and weld on a "thread extension" on other cars you can simply use a longer bolt and a spacer (or lots of washers) ie VT Commodores.
Fitting larger speakers just requires a little thought. Most "installers" will tell you you can't fit a big 6.5 into a Civic, new Hilux or WRX. WRONG. THe DDW6.5 is one of the biggest, I've squeezed them in!
Phil
PS: The DDW 6.5 set uses the legendary DDW6.5 mid with the new DD T1 and DD XO1, a 25mm rubber surround titanium tweeter and 12dB Crossover network. We also have the new DD C6.5 component set arriving soon at just $279rrp.

Phil,
I'm curious, any chance you could get a set to Drew for a demo listen?
I'm not so sure about a metal tweeter, generally I haven't liked them too much, but you never know.
Chris.
PS - oh, what sort of power handling are we talking, I'm running off an Alpine MRV-T420 I think it is, the one before the current series, from memory the birth sheet was over 100w's per channel...
PSS - Drew, I know your reading this.....

Tell Drew to take up the 100% money back guarantee (DD splits only) we have running through until the end of February, he's got all the info.

I'll go with my usual recommendations for that $$:
*Morel
*Rainbow
Something cool about having such exotic speakers rather then the norm, and both should sound great!
It's the best feeling when you tell people the brand of your speakers, and they are like "what the hell kind of cheap crap is that, ive never heard of it.."
And then they hear them and go into shock

Lets hope my $1000 Rainbows sound like $2000 speakers then (would be good if its
true) I didn't mind the Kickbass splits as well, so I put my vote in for the Kickbass.

Diamond s.500 will be the one if you want punchy midbass, has a very good soundstage and voice/instrument separation for jazz or vocal, but this speaker really suck when it comes R&B and doof..doof music. Well that's what i felt after having them for a while on my car.
