I have recently sold my speakers and am looking to upgrade to something in the high sq department. I own a holden camira with a custom parcel shelf built for 6.5" drivers in the rear and the front i will put anything in. i have recently sold an alpine mrv 540 and may replace with exactly the same thing or something similar to power them. My head unit is an Alpine CDA 9835 and i run 2 10" Viper subs off a 1000Wrms VDO amp at 1 ohm
Any suggestions???
at the mo i am thinking of
Focal polyglass v2 165 CV 165mm 2way coax
Focal Utopia splits of some sort not sure weather to go 3 way or 2 way and what size driver and the alpine mrv 540 again.
However i am open to suggestions and would love to get some decisions made soon as i would love my car to be finished again soon ThX

there are some Dyns in the for sale section at a fraction of its retail price..grab them and you'll live happily ever after ...
I was in the same track as you..I was deciding between focal and dyn, but then I went to focal polykevlar..lasted about half year, couldn't stand its brightness..I then upgraded to Dyn 240GT..a lot smoother and softer than the focal ..and very natural sound..just the way I like it
it really depends your personal preference ..but I'd go with the Dyn
they are many other good/better brands out there...how much is your budget?

not sure exactly at this stage what my budget is just want to find a really good setup and then ill make sure i can affford them would prefer to pick a set of speakers and then look at the price rather than the other way around.
i.e. i would be happy buying fronts that sounded great and not being able to buy rears until i can afford good ones rather than buy 4 not so good speakers as i have done in the past i have plenty of time.

Do not use Alpine amps to drive Focals, for some unknown bloody reason it just accentuates their already bright nature. I've directly compared the Polykevlar Focals to a set of Dyns and for my ears at least.....the Focals didnt hold much ground. Perhaps the midbass on them was a smidge punchier, but you also had to contend with highs that were just too sharp and stingy. The Focals also seemed to have a much drier sound.
Obviously some people adore Focal but the flavour doesnt settle very well with me

IMO the dyns are dull and lifeless, they lack detail and information.
nobody has ever complained that my focals are too bright, even before i EQ'd them.

go for focal or other speaker, cos focal is new and dyn is old, dyn is great speaker, but it's getting old and they should renew the model, i know dyn since 2000 and they haven't change their model since then

Unfortunatly focal stopped selling individual drivers last may. Focal had the best speakers for all kind of parameters ! You know you can buy a speaker that isn't a so called CAR SPEAKER much cheaper and higher quality ? My focals new lost a beat but to be safe i bought 6 spares . U know competition. They were $210 each.

Well, I've heard nothing but good feedback from the old school Focal Utopias (1998-1999) that I just bought from VinVin. Everybody that has heard these speakers in action are still stoked by the SQ they produce.
So I'm tipping the scales towards the focals
I ain't bagging Dynaudios. I've heard these things in play too, and I was impressed. I don't have the acquired "judging" ears for SQ AS yet... but I think I will one day

Hey Buddy!
Focal vs Dyn so the saga continues

I actually couldnt tell you which ones I like better! I have the Utopia 2way in my Project car which I really only listen to on weekends/cruises/etc, and then Morels (which have that same natural and smooth sound as the Dyns) in my daily driver. Both are run by Audison but the Morels see more power.
I couldnt give up either! But I can tell you that if you go Focal, dim down the tweets just the slightest (crossover adjustments available) and make sure they are not pointing right at your face - you'll love them

Personally, i'll go for Dynaudio... my fav pair of splits... compare to Utopia, cost you the same price but Dynaudio performs alot better... the mid is a to die for... its the best mid that i've ever heard so far... but you need a big amount of power to run them fully potential...

personaly, when i demmoed a sh1t load of splits it came down to focal and dynaudios..
i looved the the utiopias no questions.. there tweeter was alot better then the utiopias, very smooth, but pesonaly sounded very Delicate. on the other hand the dyna's mid range's was better then the utopia ones..the dyna tweeter was lacking a little over the focals for my tast...
even tho the focal tweeter for me was awsum i thought that it wouldnt not be suited to my style of music/listening.. so in the end i went the dynas... and thought if the tweeter dosnt turn out as good as i want i can replace it.. (aka, an excuss to buy horns

haha)

Why don't you try to mix the Adire Koda midbass with focal TLR tweeter and run them with Audison??? I'm sure they are gonna be awesome...

the td5 is a better choice over a tlr
if you HAD to go focal thats the tweeter i would use in my car

I haven't heard this criticism before. I am particularly bemused by the "lack detail and information" comment...........

Its true. But I would not say that they are dull, lifeless lack of detail and information. Of cause not to that extend. I would say that the Dyn are warmth and little lack of transparancy, but very easy to listen too. That what most people like. I have to admit Dyn mid is one of the best I ever come across.
Try running it active for the Dyn they are really different. But to be frank its still sound better with it own X-over.
I have hear many people claim that Focal are very bright. But I have listen to Mr Bob car, they are untrue. Very well balance in the mid, certainly not any where close to brightness for the tweeter. And very focus in the mid range.
Its all personal tase. Some like it warth, some like it thin, some like it fully transparant.
