Full Version: Anyone interested in an informal fun SQ comp?

Hey all...

Would anyone be interested in running a fun little SQ comp where everyone has to use the same ~$150 pair of speakers, and see who can get the best SQ out of them? So effectively, you can do what you like for installation, amplfication, and so on, but you can ONLY use the pair of $150 or so speakers - no subs, no other speakers or horns biggrin.gif

I just thought it might be fun to do and give a good chance for beginners to find out what does and doesnt make a big difference to SQ... i'll sponsor some prizes if it goes ahead, perhaps a Brahma 12" for 1st place and Koda 12" for 2nd place, or something like that?

Any thoughts? Perhaps Marc could agree to hold this thing as a fun wind-down after the proper CAASQ events or something?

Just dreaming but i reckon it'd be cool.

Brilliant idea.....
TEGBOY
^^^ not really the same... along the same idea tho...

But this could be alot more challenging, because this way, its a semi-level playing field
Stooge007
you just want the Brahma :tony:

Yeh, i've seen budget SQ challenges before, but the idea of this one is EVERYONE starts on a level pegging, you cant ascribe the SQ differences to the speakers used... the goal is to help people understand how you can make SQ better through other ways than just plonking more money : install, layout, intelligent design, and so on biggrin.gif

And yeh, TegBoy wants the precious wink.gif

TEGBOY
Give me the precious!!

so entrants will be allowed say a Clarion HXD2, $5,000 interconnects and say an Audison HR100 or Thesis?

If you think you can hear the difference of a few nanofarads of capacitance and level changes of less than 0.1dB on a pair of $150 speakers, sure, be my guest... wink.gif

Indeed, i couldnt find a good side-on pic of the Brahma wink.gif

I will run the with an ADS amp, with a pair of EQT's smile.gif

I guess the only prob woulod be installing the speakers. Its easy enough to go and plonk a sub on your back seat for an spl challenge, but to pull out your good speakers to install a set of $150 is a pain in the ass. Its harder to build door pods than it is to build a box if you know what i mean??
Mr_Bob
i agree,
Fudd
i would be for it, but depends on the speaker's

i dont have much room as it it.

guss i can make something up. not like i have to live with them everyday

yeha i would be in it biggrin.gif

my golden ears never lie :hehe: j/k

and what if the $150 speakers are better than my "good" speakers sad.gif

Then you will be pwned. And wiser. So its all good.

Hey, I like the idea! I've got a HXD2 as well! LOL

The question is, which $150 pair of speakers do we use?
Fudd
something really bad!! someting really hard to get to sound good...

if only dyn's were that cheep j/k

I don't think it is a good idea
Add-ons like, EQ and dynamic (spectral/colour) correction, fully custom mounting - no limits there on spending either
you could spend big $$, and the results would show.
or, for the same money, just buy better speakers in the first place.

I guess what I am trying to say is that you can polish a turd if you gold plate it first.
fury
I think it's a good idea, but just use a readily available $50 set so even us poor bums can get into it tongue.gif

Hell i'd be in on it, i'd just make a suitable box for them, shove em in my boot and hook em up to the amp on the day and "voila".
Sure don't expect to win anything, specially considering I don't have any "high end" gear, but would be fun.

Well, as an opener suggestion, I think I could arrange a group buy of Jaycar kevlar 6.5-inch splits for $150 per pair of thereabouts. Hey, they aren't the last word on SQ but for the money they can be made to sound quite good.

Any other suggestions?
fury
Sure, using jaycar splits sounds good to me.
I have an older pair spare atm tongue.gif
Saves me some dosh.

Be funny after the comp, seeing an influx of jaycar splits on the 2nd hand market.
Kevlar
Just make them a 6", and I will just pull ou the x types and put the new ones in!!!

Same settings, same pods. Too easy.

P.S Any problem with me running them throught my current cross overs?

Immo_G
Make it the current response kevlars, and i'm in smile.gif

Use anything but faykars and Im in...Im assuming all entrants use the exact same speaker ?

Hey Daniel old mate...Hows it going. Hows everyone gonna compete. Were all in different parts of Australia and your in NZ. The trip would blowout us spending our $150 on speakers? Good idea though!!!
