Full Version: Rainbow Platinum / Reference

Hey.

Does anyone here have any experience with either Rainbow Platinum or Reference speaker sets? If so, how do you think they sound compared to other top end speakers such as Focal Utopia etc?

I'm tossing up whether to go with Rainbow, or Arvus. I know the sound of the Arvus drivers is utterly sensational, leaving the likes of Dyn 360's for dead IMO, but i've heard good things about Rainbow and since its a demo car the fact they look good would be a bonus...

So in short, i'm wondering whether the Rainbow top end speakers sound good enough to ditch the ugly Arvus's as an option, because i'm only going to do that if the sound is really up there smile.gif

FHRX would be able to tell you about Rainbow...

The beauty of the References lie in the mid, when they were in Sydney I wasn't able to take a proper demo but the comments I received from a listener were "simply awesome mid, tweeter is Supremo-esque."

I've found Focal Utopia's to be so-so, they do have their moments and excel in most applications. Dynaudios- well, I've voiced my opinion on those on here already smile.gif

You wouldn't want to hide the Rainbows. As for the Arvus' well...

.... they're unashamedly ugly. But considering every person i know who owns a set listened with eyes twitching for 10 minutes and then turned into a dribbling maniac preaching Arvus to everyone within a 20 mile radius, it seems ugly doesnt put too many people off :hehe:

Yeah but its like going out with a chick because you like her personality tongue.gif

Dude, if she's as tight as my last set of Arvus speakers, i'll happily put a paper bag over her head and enjoy the rest tongue.gif

Anyway, back on topic! :hehe:

Hahaha, good call and nice edit biggrin.gif

I can tell you about the Reference in a couple of days.

How much do they retail over there?

Also, pardon my noobi-ness, but what are Avrus?

Poor ole BR. You realy should have had a look at my drivers in the BMW, but i supose the stealth install made that a bit hard. This will all change once my 8inch kick pods are made (hopefully done in a month).

Hehehe, I think that comment will make BR's decession even tougher, as he know how I rate the Arvus tweets vs the Supremos (I own both). In the end I'm prety sure it'll come down to looks vs price and not preformance. Buy what ever you like but your Soarer will never beat the BMW in CAASQ.

BR have you got room to do a 3 way front stage? ie 8/4/tweet?

Sure can do, i actually figured out a way to go with 10" mids, HLCD's and tweets if i am so inclined and/or mad enough to try biggrin.gif
Fudd
stick with the Arvus.

did you read the comparo in CA&E with the reference v's F1 v's DLS v' Morel?

they diddent do to well... from what i have been told by ppl other than the distributor they have been redesigned but? i dont know for sure.
ix
i think the review your talking about is from the previous model Ref. The Alpine F1's are with the scanspeak revelator mids.
Fudd
yeah they were the scanspeak one's

but 8k(approx) is alot of money for a speaker that you will possibly never get to listen to until you buy!
ultim8DTM5
Unless you want the 3-ways, then its more smile.gif

In the past I've used Rainbow Reference and while the tweeter (to my ears) was very impressive, it was no massive upgrade from a Supremo / Esotar etc.

The midrange is the impressive part. It is one of the smoothest drivers I have ever heard in my life. Period. From high subbass to high midrnage, the speaker just plays beautifully.

Hmm.. why yes that is true - considering your Arvus are happily sitting in my car!! of which i won a competition with!! I don't think that the Arvus are ugly, but they don't have the aesthetic/cosmetic appeal as other drivers have such as the Rainbows, Focal Dynaudio etc etc - they are amazing speakers and to some they are pretty good looking.. comparing the woofer to DDW6.5s they are pretty good looking

Still having trouble sourcing a BMW like yours Gooki - will most likely have to fly down and perform the development in your car - makes things easier all round especially with installation issues and design of enclosures as well

We're the major online dealer for Arvus car audio products in NZ (their home audio goes through the www.worldsbestspeakers.com site) but i dont know of any dealers in Aus... but if you want to hear some, go see Dreamworld in a year or so, since Arvus got the rights to do the installs for their new attractions laugh.gif

But seriously, if anyone in Aus is interested in checking out some Arvus gear, get in touch, im sure between me and Matt (Arvus owner) we'd be happy to supply a pair to one of the CAA head honchos for a review or something...
