Full Version: 31 band eq worth it ?

Just wondering about getting a 30-band eq.

I like my 7-band because it's on the dash, and I can easily adjust it for each album, giving more control than just bass and treble.

I'm presuming a 30-band is "set and forget" to correct the overall response of my system in the vehicle, in which case I could have both, keeping my 7-band to use as I currently do as an advanced tone control. Is that right?

Have I got the right idea, and is it worth it?

I was looking at the eclipse. Any others worth considering?

Regards,
Harrow.

personally iwouldn't stack 2 EQ's in the analogue path.
too much signal degradation.
if your HU has a basic tone control, ditch the 7 band in favour of a 31 band, or keep things as they are.
31 band EQ is invaluable for tuning, but you'd want to use an RTA to set it up... too hard to do "by ear", except to tweak it later on.

for competition-use, a 31-band EQ is probably essential unless your system exhibits an uncanny 'flatness' to its frequency response without it.

for daily use, it's certainly not essential unless you're a fussy audiophile (which is fair enough biggrin.gif ). but basically, it should benefit any system; whether you can justify the cost is another issue. and whether you have access to an RTA (realtime analyser) to tune it is also a potential problem.

a system tuned properly (few are tuned to be 'great' cos people don't know how or don't have the tools) won't need major on-the-fly tweaks, except the sublevel to overcome roadnoise. and most HUs and/or amps have this feature, making an indash EQ unnecessary. i would also expect a 'cheap' indash EQ to have relatively poor SQ (probably not a huge difference) compared with a high-end one like you'd expect in a 31-band jobbie

That's the ticket: it WILL benefit any system! If you've got the folding, it will be an addition. Adding any component into the signal path has the possibility of adding noise, but if you pay attention to the basics of cable running and power delivery, you'll be fine.

I'll be adding a Phoenix Gold EQ-232 to my rig shortly. Once enough stuff is folded over...
