Full Version: Phase queries...I'm out of ideas

Thought i'd seek opinions on this one, after the Hektic CAASQ comp my worst scoring came from phase issues where it was suggested to fix it that i should try changing the polarity of the tweeters, and possibly also the mids to help overcome it. Fault was when playing track 5 (i think it is, where they call out voices around the room), apparently they were being played as if they were ontop of eachother.

well i gave it a go the other night, first as-it-was (though i have since tweaked the eq a little more as the old tune simply sounded dull and lathargic to me) playing the F1 Status CD and some Michael Jackson for a back to back. Honestly i can't see what the fault is with it, i can make out each person at the same time in the correct spot high up on the dash, but hey ah well i'm still sq newbie
I then tried reversing the polarity of the tweeters, played the same track back and couldn't really hear much difference in where the voices were coming from, but defiantely did notice when playing music tracks that it sounded absoluetely abysmal! Hard to explain, i simply don't have the terminology for how it sounded, but it was like part of the music wasn't there, and sounds were coming almost delayed from the high notes...i guess basically it didn't do the system any favours.
I tried changing them back again, and again it sounded great, so i then tried reversing the polarity of the mids only, and it was harder to notice the difference than with the tweets but it defiantely didn't sound right and the same track didn't sound much different from a voice location point of view. Finally i tried having everything out of phase, and it sounded almost dull, again, hard to put into words but now im stumped with what to do sad.gif

anybody offer any suggestions on what to do or whats going on? i honestly can't hear whats wrong with the phase of the system, especially playing music, imo its excellent for something not using kicks and ambients. Oh for those that don't know, its a VX Calais International with Morel Elates, mids in the doors in glass pods (stock location angled up far as possible) and tweeters in stock location on dash pointing almost to the opposing headrest. so any suggestions on whats going on? as im dead keen on improving my score next round, and really need this area fixed as its my biggest drawback on the scoresheet sad.gif

well, generally, I would connect the midwoofer out of phase to the tweeter, and woofer.... reversing the phase of the tweeter AND the midwoofer wouldn't do anything to the vocal range of frequencies, as you just ended up with the same thing. tongue.gif
nemesis
lol yeh exactly, but i thought it was worth a go :tony:
oh and its the Elate 2-way setup to, so no midrange to fuss about for anyone wondering
Fudd
my phaze issue's on the day were from my tweeters out of phaze with my mid's

your running passive yeah? i would check the polarity on the xover's/amp/speaker just to be sure.
nemesis
yep exactly, and i've checked everything 3 times over. plus neither the x/o or the amp have polarity reverse switches, which only leaves cables, and they're labeled on Stinger signal cable and i checked all the connections, so you can see why im stumped on what to do sad.gif

Try listening at home or in a showroom with your CD , but with a fairly good home system. Place the speaker correctly sit in the center. have a good listen. Take that as a reference and try to make it sound as close as it is from the showroom. Imaging, focus, width and depth. Car audio is all about balance and power.

I know that a 12 dB/oct crossover (like most of them are) has a 180 deg. phase shift at the x-over frequency, so the idea is to reverse-phase the tweeter-to-mid in order to balance the phase around the crossover frequency.

I looked also at the old ETI series 4000 speakers project - and yep, that's what they've done.

open up the crossover, and see if the -ve from the tweeter is connected to the +ve from the mid - it may already be crossed over.

I haven't done it yet - will be this week, will report here when I try it.

well, i think the judges 'were on drugs' that day regarding phases issues. seriously, i didn't think there was any probs with most of the systems i auditioned that had this picked up.

in the end, it would seem a compromise. you might fix the phase, but you'll probably lose out on imaging, stage width, etc.

i'd just leave it how it was unless you have time alignment to help fix things. biggrin.gif

they said i did and they were correct biggrin.gif

thanks guys
im going to retry the home system bench test and go from there, haven't done that one for a while it should give me a better prospective on whats going on i reckon.

oh and the x/o's are the fully sik adjustables on both the mid and tweet, plus cut, but i have them on 24db and 0, so its not there

Hahaha!
Maybe you should have one set of settings for judges and another for yourself smile.gif
