Hey Guys,
I have bought an Alpine MRD-M1001 amp but at the moment I am still running some old Alpine VR 10" subs off it, so I’m looking at getting something new. I listen to all sorts of music so I am looking at getting 1 or 2 12" sub. Correct me if I’m wrong but I have heard that 12" subs will be the best to listen to all types of music from.
Being the MRD-M1001 amp what ever I get I want to run it at 2 Ohms. I have looked at a few different types of sub, eclipse, Rockford Fosgate, Xtant and Focal. So far the ones I like best are the focal 33 KX (13"). But I don’t like the $750 price tag that comes with each of them...
What I would like to know is; are the Focal subs really worth the price (I will have to buy 2 as they are 2 x 2 Ohms.
And what else would you guys recommend.

Any advise will be appreciated.

how about TDX 12" (diamond audio)

Have just looked at the details for this, looks very impresive. Do you know of anywhere I would be able to get this delived to me in ACT as we only have 3 good sound audio shops in the ACT and none of them stock Diamond Audio gear?
Thanks

i've used a few subs in my time, and heard plenty more. i currently run an image dynamics IDMAX12, and this is the best value 'phat' sub i've encountered. this class of sub (which i call 'phat') involves big magnet strength and high cone excursion as part of the key to awesome performance.

you will typically require only one such sub and the power you have will suit that. some to consider include:
*image dynamics IDMAX12 RRP$849
*diamond audio TDX12
*digital designs
*RE audio XXX RRP$1099
*alpine type-X RRP$899

they vary in power handling and box requirements, so research carefully.

FHRX studios, based in NSW and a CAA supporter, can ship most of these subs to you.

Well I was looking at 2 focal’s which was going to cost $1500. So anything less then that.

I have had a look the site shiny has mentioned as well and this seams to have all the stuff I cant get in Canberra

for the price, a single IDMAX, RE XXX or DD would be extremely hard to beat in terms of performance for both SQ and ability to go damn loud and accurately.

i run my IDMAX in a sealed 1.3cuft enclosure - beautiful. the RE XXX can go sealed or ported, and the DD subs generally warrant ported boxes (seek advice from 'DD Phil' amongst others). if space and weight are a limitation, then perhaps the IDMAX would be ideal.

The idmax gets my vote, they also sound terrific in a ported box too. They are very sensitive subs so with 1000wrms they will be moving the full 3 inchs of excursion.

On the subject.........

Look for the upcoming issue of Car Audio & Electronics. Our 3510 is compared with the IDmax 10", JL 10W6 and Rockford T2-10".

Our 3510 acheived the highest score of the bunch!

Here's a few quotes from the article:

"neither of them (JL/ID) could match the output and low-frequency extension" (of the DD and RF)

"Digital Designs edged out the Rockford Fosgate for the strongest output of the group"

"The Digital Designs 3510d and Rockford Fosgate T210D4 turned in very similar performances, which is particularly impressive for the 3510d considering its price"

"the Digital Designs handled the nuances a bit better"

"The bass synthesizer was reproduced deep and tight with the 10W6v2 as well as the IDMax10D4 V.4, but the 3510d and T210D4 really moved some air to make you feel the bass in addition to hearing it"

Finally our woofers are getting much deserved recognition for their musical abilites!

Hey hyper - good to see a new ACT face! biggrin.gif

We have two meets coming up (this Sunday and the Sunday afterwards) and I am sure that the guys who are coming along would love to show off their particular subs/amp combos.
I for one will be there - so you can have a good look at the RE XXX.

Pop into the ACT forum or PM me your mobile number and I can give you more details about the meet if you are interested.

In terms of straight out reccomendations - don't buy anything that you haven't had a listen to. I think that the RE XXX is the best SQ woofer in it's price range at the moment and as you were looking around the $1500 mark this shouldn't be a problem for you.

Anyways - hope to hear from you
