Heya...
Well, after what I feel is a good run in period for my speakers (Viper 650.2 Splits), I notice, and have for some time, that the sound at some stages comes predominantly from the passenger tweeter....
Now the way it's all set up in my car, is the tweeters are high on the doors, and angled towards the other door (flat against the door...). I understand this isnt the best way to mount tweeters, but I had holes there from a previous (stupid) install, and i didnt want them showing...
Yes I know that the tweeter in drivers door is firing somewhat into the steering wheel, and not towards me, but I'm unsure what to do about this (short of building tweeter pods for up the in doors to cover the hole, or buying new door skins/covering mine).
Anywho I was wondering if I should set the attenuation of the left tweeter down to -6db, and leave the right one at -3db....
I guess best thing for me to do is to try this, but it can be annoying getting at my xovers.
Also, I guess i'm wondering if anyone else has any ideas about this...
Cheers,
Fury

Sorry maybe the above isnt clear. I write everything down without thinking or rereading, it's a bad habbit...
Basically the sound from the tweeter seems like it is coming predominantly from the passenger side...
How do I make the sound more "centered" or even directed towards me...
Would changing the attenuation on the passenger tweeter from -3db to -6db (they are both at -3db atm) help this?
Is fading towards the drivers side (right) better thing to do? Althought this will affect everything (rear & sub, although sub is mono). Played with this briefly but set it back to being centered as it makes the one woofer work loads harder, seems quite noticable.
Obviously I don't have anything fancy like gains for each side, nor is it being run active... nor time alignment...
I'm going to have a play around with it soon, just need to get to my xovers to change it.
Any ideas/suggestions on fixing this would be great...
Also, what's the official term for it? would it be stage width or something (/noob).
Cheers.

try reversing the phase on both and attenuating the passenger side tweeter. attenuation gives somewhat a time alignment effect by delaying the tweeters.
really the only way would be to play with them with multiple configurations and lots of listening to get the end result your looking for.

Yeah I figure i'll have to play around with them, just trying to get some ideas first, as the xovers are under my seats and it's not the easiest to get to them...
Will try the attenuation, then I'll try reverse the phase of them after that.

Fury,
Why not get a set of the cheapest tweeters you can find, and use them to plug the hole in the door, but don't have them connected. Then you can find a good location for your new tweeters. No point in settling for second best, as they are never going to sound their best where they are.

Harrow.

The holes are about 1" and there's metal behind...
They were originally cut before thinking about what was behind (stupid i know)....
Know of anything about 1cm deep about 1" diam that'll block the hole and not look too bad... (also there are small screw holes to either side, so if it has a large overhang, that'd be handy too...).
I've considered new door trims which i'd love to get, but if a rear parcel shelf is $88, then i dont want to know what the door trims are (This is a Hyundai Excel if you're wondering)
Cheers.

Well, changed the attenuation of the left tweet to -6db and instantly the sound seems more centered... I feel it may be a little overdone (-5db would be better)...
Also, it seems that the way i drive (hand on top of steering wheel, elbow on window sill) blocks the left tweeter... So I have to change my driving style
Not sure if i can be bothered changing polarity of the tweets just yet, i'll drive round as it is for a while, see how i like it, and then decide.
Cheers.

What about old tweeter flush mounts in the hole, with a bit of cloth over them?
Should look ok.

Hrm, now there's a possibility... they almost cover up the screw holes as well.... I guess put some wood or something in the flush mounting piece, to seal it up...
I'll have to think about how/where to mount the tweeters then, I don't really want to fork out for fibreglass pods for them on the a pillar somewhere.. Where would be an ideal place? I would think the base of the a pillar/dash? and angle them properly towards me?
I didnt want to have to take my door skins off again but I guess I might.
Oh, and where to get speaker cloth? Do spotlight have it? or do i have to go to a specialist store?
More to come...
Cheers.
