Hey, i dont know if this is the right board to put this in but its the closeest i can think of
I am going to be installing my xbox into my car and was wondering if anyone knew where i can get the DC-DC power supplys like on mp3car.com in Victoria?....ive been to jaycar and and a few computer stores but they were no help at all
Any info at all would be great as i feel paying about 150 for the PS to be imported is a bit steep considering the xbox will only cost bout 150

what power rails are in the Xbox?
Giant
Apr 20 2005, 02:15 PM
is this what you are after?......from what ive found it needs to be minmum 90W
and i can get or even make a converter for the SB line if you know where to get one that has PC values
+12V for motherboard : 0.05A - 0.6A (peak 2.1A)
+5V for motherboard : 2.5A - 12.7A (peak 17.5A)
+3.3V for motherboard : 1A - 4.8A (peak 6.5A)
+12V for HDD : 0A - 0.6A (peak 2.9A)
+5V for HDD : 0A - 0.5A (peak 1.5A)
+3VSB : 0mA - 20mA (peak 50mA)

+3VSB?? sure that's not 5VSB?
The problem would be the +12 - you would have to SMPS that (I think motorola make a couple of all in 1 12V IC's don't they which take like 5-18V in?) - all the others would be FAIRLY easy (linear regs with pass transistors) although that's not the most efficient approach...

Apr 20 2005, 03:22 PM
thanks for your help...ill keep building it my self as one of my options
yeah the xbox is 3VSB normal PCs are 5VSB but u can buy converters for this as there are a few other little differences between PC psu and the xbox psu
STIK79
Apr 20 2005, 03:25 PM
lol just run a diode with a vf of approx .3V off of the 3.3V line = 3VSB
stazed
Apr 20 2005, 06:15 PM
Is all of this more efficient than just running a 12V DC - 240V AC transformer and using the stock power cable?
STIK79
Apr 20 2005, 06:55 PM
absolutely.
And much less chance of induced noise common with running crude inverters

Get the Opus from MP3CAR.COM
Fantastic reliability, awesome build quality, great documentation etc.
Best of all, mine was delivered within 10 days of ordering it.

You'd have to mod the opus for 3VSB, also does it actually support 16.5A @ 5V?! PC power supply might have the rails current capabilities slightly different.
edit- googled
the 120W opus only supports 8A on +5V
the 150W opus does 10A (15A peak) which is still pushing it a bit - I wouldn't recommend it

Did that ugly pic come with it?
I'm keen on this 12v powersupply for the xbox, just the thing I need to get mine into the falcon.
How much was it landed here Marc?

Apr 20 2005, 10:06 PM
yeah ive looked at both the opus and the M1 from mp3car...but as i said earlier i wanna try save myself the 35 us to get it here
@^bob: The m1 is $74.99US (90W)
The opus 90W is $129.99 US
The Opus 150W is $179.99 US
Postage was approx $35US
To convert the sb all u need is the Apache from tribe mods...which also fixes a few other small differences
@marc Have u had any troubles at all...or was yours for a pc?

Giant do you have any links to where people have successfully modded their xbox's with these psu's?
Giant
Apr 21 2005, 06:13 PM
Sorry no exact links..but as ive been searching round heaps for info i did read somewhere someone got a standard pc power suply working with the xbox all they need was the appache from here to get it working properly...so i assume it would work the same...well thats what im hoping anyway
http://www.tribemods.com/cgi-bin/store/sho...d=8549206_76187
These sites are my main sources atm aswell as CAA
www.mp3car.com
www.xbox-scene.com
i read in another post somewhere...i cant remember where but someone said the opus was available in NZ...if anyone knows the link could you please let me know thanks

Yeah I been reading up on it all now, going to have a chat to one of the teachers at tafe tommorow about this. See how much is into developing my own powersupply.
Well more-so modifying an existing ATX powersupply from the transformer backwards, to be able to run off 12V
Giant
Apr 21 2005, 11:54 PM
sounds good....if its not to hard to do let me know
i dont know whether uve been here but this site is all about getting a PC PSU to run an xbox so if u need any info most of it is here

Wouldn't be too bad - basically rip off the primary side of the transformer, ie rectification etc etc then rewind the transformer to suit 12V instead - there will be a seperate transformer for the 5VSB too

hey bob^
I got the link for where you can get the M1 ATX from NZ...only $120

if u decide to go ahead with building your own let us know how u go but im going to get it from here

Theres the circuit board and parts list to make your own...but for $120, meh. It will cost me more than that in parts!
bob
Apr 23 2005, 10:47 PM
mmm don't know how that powersupply will go.
It's only 90w. Current on the 5v is 10amps max, and peaks at 15 for under 60 seconds. Where as the xbox draws a max of 12.5amps, and peaks at 17...
I'll let you buy it first and you can let me know how it goes
But there is this
http://www.itx.co.nz/product_info.php?cPat...products_id=232
Runs off 12v. Just need to build up a circuit thats outputs a regulated 12v, and have a small sealed battery hooked up to it to survive cranking. I think this is the powersupply I will go with.
Actually that doesn't look much better spec wise

Disregard that last post. I see people have been using the M1 with great success.
Looks like the BA is getting an xbox!

Just use an inverter, It is alot easier.

Apr 25 2005, 09:16 PM
Hey just makin sure u dont forget that if ur using the M1 or any other non xbox PSU then u need to buy the apache adapter for it to work from here

or make one using this tut

hey guys i am putting an xbox in my car soon and was originally going to use an invertor. but if ive read all the links correctly, i could just get one of those M1 power supplies from mp3car plus the apache harness from tribemods and that will be all i need to get the xbox running, and be a lot "nicer" than using a 240v invertor.
am i on the right track?

Thats the one. So long as your comfortable with pulling apart your XBOX and don't plan on putting it back in the house any time soon. I was going to go down the same route and then just have a 12v powersupply in the house to power up the XBOX when I wanted to use it, but I have since discovered an XBOX won't be suitable for my application
Pitty too because it ran so nice on the factory screen.

if only it ran XP

!!!
its got the goods otherwise...('cept for the fact that it reads from the IDE in reverse so as not to be compatible with pc hardware!)
can you say "C*NTS"?

What hardware u wanting to put it it? DVD's and Hard drives can be swapped with only slight modification (none at all in the case of a hard drive)
oh and scarecrow...i found it quite simple and a heap cheaper to make my own adapter rather that buy one from tribe mods
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=57838
has all the info u need including diagrams of the circuit
my project was goin along nicely till the car stopped working
Ill keep u all posted on how things come along

I was thinking of doing the xbox in car but have gone off the idea.
Here is the link for the power supply:
http://www.eyo.com.au/prod_G-Car-60_prodde..._3677_3688.htmlto convert it has already been posted.
Has anyone actually got it going?

same as above
i would love to do this
am able to solder, but am unsure of what power supply to use
as far as i can work out from about 2 hours of reading, most power supplies match the xboxs need (1.1 - 1.5)
but there is one wire, that needs a voltage drop?
would be great if some one could write up a guide for us aussies

Wow a thread back from the dead.
To get it working is very simple
Get the M1 or M2 from the NZ site linked on page 1 of this thread
then get the adapter from here (this drops the voltage required as well as inverts some of the required lines.)
http://shop.sickmods.net/shop/PSU_Converter/plug and play!
I never actually ended up getting mine in there as time and cash were an issue back in the day....may look at it again when i get a new car

I had mine running using this setup (M1-atx and the patch from sickmods) and it was fine....until i was extending some wires so as to run the DVD drive and the buttons outside the case and drop the iron. It melted a connection and i got over it lol. It remains in my second draw as i write....

you cant rip the transformer out of an ATX power supply, because it doesnt have one, switch modes dont use mains transformers
