Ppl are always telling me that JL subs are fairly good SQ wise (I have a pair, and I agree), but anyone had any experience with the JL Splits? Not any particular model really, just as a whole, as since I have a JL amp, subs, I thought I may as well get JL splits IF they are any good.

haven't heard many JL split set-ups.
imo, there are other brands worth considering e.g Boston, Rainbow, Morel, Diamond, Focal etc.
depends on your budget

Every splits thread has them suggested (and with good reason im sure).
But for some of us we cant get to listen to brands like that as I live in the country and its hard to go to the big smoke just to listen to speakers

, well thats my problem. I would be interested to see how JL splits are also. Subs are excellent for SQ.

I've got the JL XR650 splits. They are very comparable to other's I've heard including Boston pro's, focals, MB Quart Reference series.
I think they sound great and will hold their own against anything in the same price range. (around $500-$1K).

I agree with BlackRain. I've heard the VR600 (150mm) splits and quite liked them. The ZR series should be available here in Aus soon, or so I have been told. Apparently (someone correct me if I'm wrong

) they'll retail for $1500ish or something like that and be JL's flagship component speaker. Will be very interesting to see how they stack up to the higher end Focals, Bostons etc.

i had the VRs as well for a couple of years they are comparable to other speakers in that price range, as i remember they had poor midbass though i guess all speakers that cheap dont have much midbass!

curious as to how they were set up. Any sound D? what sort of power you giving them?

i ahve owned a pair of vr650-csi for almost a year, adn must say that the mid bass does lack a bit, but maybe im not powering them enough, im giving 160 rms each... though the tweeter is awsome, pretty well detailed and precise for a set that price, i think they retail for about $350-$400. if they are in ur budget i would recomend them as good value for money...

ps. no sound deadening so they ring at high volumes, will fix that soon though. that might also help my mid bass problem!?

Without proper sound deadening and sealing, you're probably missing out alot on midbass. Even the stock speakers in my VT commo sounded very good wen I sound deadend and sealed my doors.

no sound D, but ill explain the way they were installed:
i used custom pods which were attached to the standard door trims, with a perfect seal inside the pod (i thought it was a good idea to keep them in a sealed enclosure) so they were not just flapping around in the standard door skin..
i was only supplying them with about 50wrms but i dont think they needed too much more than that, at good listening levels the amp was no where near clipping...
im quite sure if u installed them into a SD'd door with more power you would get more out of them, but then again they only cost $300 new so you cant expect too much midbass! probably better off to get focal access 6.5's

If you were using sealed pods, then I thought SDing would be less of an issue, and useful for reducing road noise only

Maybe so, but depending on the size of your enclosure (sealed pod), using the whole door as an enclosure should improve midbass on any speaker considerably

about the sealed pods that what i thought, and about using the whole door, i didnt know much about SD at the time and figured it would be best just doing it as i did it... who knows, and besides in that car the exhaust was LOUD and the bass from the (way oversize ported) sub was LOUD as it was a hatchback too so even with more midbass i prob wouldnt have noticed it much

I know of a few people running the VR-600's. They are good for their price range (paid around $280 for them here in Aus), much improvement on offer once sound deadening is in.
The XR's I have which are one level up have more detail and stronger midbass, but since they're more expensive and were JL's flagship model for several years, that's expected. Can't get XR's in australia though, they never made it here, so u have to source them from the states.
It's a good thing the ZR series is coming down..but $1500 RRP is a hell of a lotta money - hope they're good!

If your having mid bass problems why don't you look at getting a MaxxBass 103 it will help with the mid bass greatly. It will let your 6" speakers sound like they are 8" mid bass'.
have a look here for more info on how it works.
