I have a sony CD head unit and recently it just stopped working.
I will tell it to play a CD, it'll sit as if it's trying to find the track and after about a minute it says "error" and ejects the CD.
Can this be easily fixed?
Or is it time to get a new head unit?

At as guess, I'd say the laser can't read the cd, or that the motor has stopped spinning cds and so it won't read it. have you tried putting in a cleaning cd?

No haven't tried that.
I heard they don't really help?
Also on hot days it would skip over bumps but now since it's much cooler it didn't do it lately

Take it apart and clean the lens directly.

Having a similar issue with my pioneer - except that the CD just skips like a MF constantly, even with a brand new CD. Its about four years old, and I've tried cleaning the lens, to no avail. Apparently the transports in Pioneer H/U's are not the best. I have a more drastic solution though - I'm buying an eclipse!!

KickerCat my friend with an Alpine had that problem!
The unit was opened and cleaned and still same problem. It would even skip at traffic lights!
Do you know what the problem is?
Is there any place I can sell my HU if it's stuffed? Maybe someone who would buy it cheap fix it himself?

Could be laser out fo alignment or the pot the controls the power has gone haywire.

I've been told the actual transport (the mechanism that holds and spins the CD) is RS. could be an adjustment like gooki said, but I'm buying an eclipse, so I'm not looking into repair costs too much

Yeah, mine used to skip anywhere, at the lights, stationary, engine off or on, burned or bought CD, old or new. I belted the **** out of the side of the center console till it picked up again

hahaha!
What do you guys think I should look for in a new head unit?
Just the features/looks I want?
I am thinking of those Pioneer DEH 9650 (I think this is the model #)
They have a cool display!

No it has some "less" features
I am the kind of person that see's it in a way "if I am spending money, I may as well spend more and get the newest, best"
The 9650 isn't that expensive, I have a friend who can get it stock price for me.
