Full Version: Amp Selection for GTS

Im currently researching amps for the GTS and am looking for the best combination of amps to suit my needs:

I'm using my Clarion HXD2 running 2 way active front + rear + sub

Boston Pro 6.5 mids
Vifa Tweeters
Boston G512 (edit: single 4 ohm)
Stock rears

Could anyone suggest any combinations that would work well?

hope you have a big budget. biggrin.gif

a reasonable combo is a 4-channel (tweeters + rears) + 2-channel (boston mids) + monobloc (G5).

i like to brand-match my amps, so suitable combos would include:

*alpine PDX
*audison LRx
*rockford fosgate T (Power) series
*boston acoustics (no monobloc, but their big 2-channel amps are dual mono)
*dls ultimate
*hertz
*digital designs

obvoiusly, there's a huge choice. so you probably need to sort out a budget, confirm the amp configurations (ie: 1/2/4-channel amps), and find a brand/series to suit.

i would personally favour alpine PDX or audison LRx. alpine is readily available, and audison has a great pedigree and the LRx allegedly sound fantastic.

What shiny has listed, are excellent gear.

It's just up to you on budget, looks, preferred sound, and the number of amps, space available.

Also add in, JL audio slash amps, and Eclipse XA series and also Audiosystem.

Thanks Richard,

I have decided NOT to go with the IB setup for my subs and will go for the traditional 12 inch - in box and amps on display (with trim panels to hide in a similar fashion to Damos)

I havent looked so carefully at the budget yet, but the 3 amp layout seems to be the right idea, however the G512 is a single 4ohm, so it may not be a monoblock... instead a big 2 channel.

Out of your brand list:
I do like the Audisons, but would like to try something different this time (not that i dont like them, just time for a change i guess)
I dont want to use RF, nor Hertz or DD
This leaves Alpine PDX, DLS and Boston.

I was thinking i would like at least 100w RMS to each front mid, 50w RMS to each tweeter and each rear speaker and at least 600w RMS to the sub. Does this sound reasonable? and which trio of each brand would fit that criteria?

Cheers!

often a monobloc provides more grunt than a bridged 2-channel, due largely to the size of the internal power supply and stiffening caps. but no issues with 2-channel amps like a boston (dual mono).

i agree, and think the power specs will be ideal, though more won't help if you can afford it.

*alpine PDX-4100 + PDX-2150 + PDX-1.600 (or 1.1000)
*boston acoustics GT40 + GT22 + GT24 (or GT28)

the JL '/' series, as suggested, is certainly as good. 300/4 + 300/2 + 500/1 (or 1000/1) would be a great combo.

advantages of the alpine PDX and JL / monoblocs is that they produce the same power with your 4ohm sub, as if you happened to have a 2ohm sub.

rrp of each would come to around $2000 for the PDX and $2200 for the Boston. (gt24 option)

At the moment there is a GT28 for sale for $550 on these forums and FHRX are selling another GT28 for 800 and GT40 for $500, that would be ideal but im not ready to start buying evrything just now (so soon to christmas).

it's quite amusing how the sizes of the PDX vs boston (GT28) are SO disparate! you could probably fit 3x PDX side-by-side to achieve the same footprint as one GT28. tongue.gif

you've got the space, so a boston trio would be very tough.

after reading some of the above posts... i'd go a PDX set dan..

the 3 that richard listed would be ideal.. wink.gif

PDX 2.150 = front midbass
PDX 4.100 = front tweeters & rears
PDX 1.1000 - sub

Why not? They all make some really nice amps.

For example if you used two of our S4, you would have:

Tweeters - 100Wrms
Mids - 200Wrms
Rears - 100Wrms
Sub - 600Wrms into 4 ohms

All with on board 24dB/oct band-pass crossovers, with an rrp of just $1998

Geoff (GSN03) recently upgraded to an S4 for his front end with incredible results (this in a car already considered by many to be one of the best sounding at the CAASQ finals).

Well it DOES offer the perfect power output ide like for each driver, and can be done using only 2 amps rather then three. Which is better then all the above listed and for the same price.
I havent read up on the S4, but thats such a smart idea having different power outputs for 1+2 compared to 3+4 of a 4 channel

Mate, I will give you my S4 to try. I am not using it, your more than welcome to it! Car is off the road.
