well after more research on the web and through the help of others on here, Im finding more and more out about speakers...

So I've heard that Vifa make Alpine tweeters? Polk audio tweeters?
Scanspeak are used in alpine's F1 drivers?

As the speakers such as Vifa, Morel, Sea's etc seems to be priced quite low, taking into account they have no passives, no grills and are sold as 1 unit

On the most known brands on the market, for car audio, are people able to give a break down on what they know? as in who makes what for the big audio companies
the_iano
Dynaudio make everything themselves, does that help you?

Dayton makes the best bang for your buck stuff, ever.

I know some car audio companies make their own speakers, Im more wanting to know the ones that use these other drivers such as vifa

The Alpine type X mids were also based of a now discontinued Vifa mid, Genesis alos have some speakers based of the Scanspeak Rev range, TC Sounds now called Audiopulse produced Eclipse subs aswell as some for a lot of other companies, Image Dynamics also do alot of build house work for other companies Arc Audio subs drivers etc.. are all built by ID.

The thing to remember is though that these arent just rebadged products but modified versions built to the required specs sometimes they can be quite similar and other times the only similarities are visual only.

Keeping to to speakers only:

At one stage Phoenix Gold's high end speakers were Morel rebadges.
Nakamichi's glass fibre speakers use VIFA drivers and tweeters.
Max Fidility make/made tweeters for Atomic Loudspeakers, Image Dynamics, Arvus
VDO Daytona used Peerless speakers.

Just because a buildhouse, owned by a particular company, makes a speaker, such as Scanspeak, doesnt mean that company units such as Genesis and Alpine F#1 are just rebadged. In fact, a lot of company resources goes into designing these units based on the Scanspeak (for example) design. They are actually different units because the T/S specs are marketably different.

From what I remember, there are only two large-output buildhouses left in America. DD is one, and Image Dynamics is the other. ID has an incredibly large one, and multiple companies get their units constructed there.

There are quite a few OEM companies, whose designs or buildhouses, are used for manufacturing drivers. Of the top of my head, Tymphany (denmark - scanspeak, korea/thailand - peerless and vifa), Morel, Dayton, Dynaudio (used to, no longer though), Skaaning are a few.

Yeah as Matt and myself have both stated don't think that you are getting the same speaker etc... just because it looks the same, as Matt said most times the T/S specs etc... will be very different.

Just thought of 2 other examples, CDT are all modified versions of Vifa/Peerless drivers, and the other one is Diamond Audio there Hex range used Eton mids and LPG tweeters.

A valid point made by thematt. Just although a speaker may be based on another company's design (or built by another company) it doesn't make them the same speaker necesarilly.

The Alpine F1 is based upon the Scanspeak Revelator, however by all reports they vary quite heavilly from the original design. Many people believe the Alpine versions to not be as good as the original Scanspeak components, despite the price premium.

As far as other brands, Lotus Speakers are built by Seas - so that's another to add to the list.

Morel
  • Make their own speakers
  • Design & supply drivers to many companies in car and home audio. Many products are manufatured to the customers specs which may be totally different to what morel would consider for their own product.
  • Have passive crossovers
  • Have grills
  • Sold in pairs not in single units
Companies such as Alpine and many others often use other more well established speaker manufacturers to help design or totally design their premium products but very very few products if any in the top end are as simple as another companies product with a new badge.
