im looking for a set of 2.1 computer speakers with a proper remote;
ie none of these volume controls with cables attached.
ive currently got the logitech z3000 (albeit with the mentioned tethered volume control) so any suggestions of systems that are as good as or even better than that would be fantastic. cheers

may sound stupid, but how about a home audio (mini system) with proper sized speakers and more powerful sub... Sony has one model for around $250-$300 (just not very good near crt monitors due to no magnetic shielding)

Or...
A remote control for your computer?
You could control the volume (and play, pause, etc.) on Windows (or whatever OS you're using) instead.

just use ur tv speakers or buy a stereo and connect that up, there 2.1 stereos out there
there are connectors from 3.5mm to rca so it should work from pc to stereo or what ever ur using it for.

i need suggestions for mini and micro systems. something with decent enough sound for movies and perhaps even loud enough to be used as house party speakers on occassion.
no budget atm, obviously want to spend as little as possible while trying to get the best valued system for money. cheers

Ay buddy, like another fella said before, get the logitech Z-5500's. I bought some a month ago, and are still going strong, the sub is 188w RMS, and the system comes with an amp, with Dolby DTS n all that.
They have great bass and are very loud. I reccomend you go to MSY www.msy.com.au and check it out, they have them for $363 all new in box n stuff. They retail over $700, well the model under, the z-5450's are going for $698 at other retailers.
If budget isn't really an issue and your after some real quality sound, get these speakers. For the money they are well worth your buy. At the $360 mark your definetly getting GREAT value for money. Definetly make good house party speakers.
-Coaxial connection
-Optical connection
-Headphone input
-PC connections.. (6channel)
-Wall mountable speakers (they rotate from a benchtop position to a wall position)
-Sub has an automatic shut-off switch if it gets too hot (and it does get fairly hot, unfortunetly, but hasn't shut off for me yet)
Any other questions on them just ask away mate!
