Hey guys, it's time for my BMW to retire, and the Pathfinder also.

Looking to take ownership next month (or have the opportunity to) of a 2003 Audi A4 1.8L Turbo, in absolutely immaculate condition (including dealer servicing and full history, known owners). It has a full body kit all round, and 18" wheels, leather and all options etc.

Looking for opinions on this model, and in particular the 1.8 Litre, Turbo, Auto (tiptronic?).

Never really been into the Audi's or know much about them, but I particuarly like the look of this one.

Apart from being slower than my Volvo, they’re an excellent car! I have driven a couple now. A beautiful car inside and out.

Providing it has always been services by an Audi specialist at its designated intervals, you should have no trouble. And because you’re used to servicing two cars, cost of further services shouldn’t bother your pocket. Reasonable economy too. smile.gif

Good looking cars the A4's .... even better with big wheels & a kit .... and being German engineering I would think it would be built to last.

Is it FWD or AWD?

hopefully it'll serve you well. always fun upgrading a car. smile.gif

i'm obviously biased, but i consider audi's (aside from a select few models) boring and lacking flare. yet that means they are easy to drive, safe, and not much to worry about. and of course they have excellent build quality.

sounds like it's in good condition and riced up nicely, so if you like it, go for it!

By full history does that mean reciepts for all the work that has been done to the car because i know many people get there car serviced at my work for the sake of a dealer history but by doing that they skimp on repairs to there car. Eg an oil leak will not be fixed due to the customer not wanting to pay anymore because they spent too much on the service itself.

Hi Marc, head over to ozaudi.com there should be some more Audi orientated help over there. If I had a choice I would go for the A4 2.0 Turbo Quattro. One of them that I know of has 200 KW at all four wheels.

Thought the 1.8t fwd will have advantages over the quattro being lighter and will use less fuel.

If you need someone to look at it, James at Audvolks in Clayton should be able to help. Tell him Dylan sent you.

Marc
Thanks Dylan and others for your feedback.

Performance, I'm really just not interested in these days. I did the whole stroked 304 thing and got used to replacing trans/diffs etc years ago. These days I simply want reliability, comfort, fuel consumption and a bit of zip for take off. The 318is was "ok", so I'm sure I'll be satisfied with the added kw of the Audi over my BMW.

Doooooooooooooooooooooooooo Itttttttttttttttttttttttt!!!!!

Lovely cars if you ask me, sure not a performance beast, but a nice comfortable cruiser.

Yummy, big A4 fan. My mum had an A6 until she sold it last year, it was a great car.

But, where will the horns and the touch screen fit?!? smile.gif

In all seriousness bro, I say do it. You won't look back.
Marc
To be honest, I doubt I'll do much audio wise other than some OE integration, + amps and top notch speakers, all stealth.

The horns and touchscreen etc, is being sold with the BMW. The car's been cleaned right up, and being sold as is. Basically drop in your own amps and sub.

The 1.8T in the B6 model has been around for a while, but at the same time they're from all accounts very reliable motors.

IIRC the 1.8T Auto is a CVT box, very smooth but not the strongest of things, especially if you plan to do any performance based modifications. That said, plenty of owners on OzAudi (go join up btw) have stage 1 ECU mods (~140-150kw/300 odd nm depending on the chip) on their FWD 1.8T Auto's without any problem, although that is about the max the box can take

If you've got your eyes set on a particular car, I recommend you do a full pre-purchase inspection at one of the Audi specialists in Melb (I use Euroclass in Richmond, but I have mates who go to James @ AudiVolks in Clayton and swear by him too). My car had a full Audi Centre Melbourne service history, but Euroclass still picked up on every little bit that Audi missed, and convinced the owner to rectify these as part of the RWC.

I can say this about the A4 turbo... they aint fast cars.

audi's are more expensive vw's. they are all the same parts, circuitry etc, just different name.
you could probably pick up a newer vw golf gti or similar for the same price?
& as with all european cars, u need a fat wallet to service em. parts are expensive to say the least.

Leviathan
Gareth, I drive a VW and I wouldn't say they are the same, they may share a lot of the parts but that doesnt make them the same.

The Audi's have just that much more stuff to warrant paying the price. Example, when you pull a VW apart and a similar Audi the Audi's always have a lot more Sound deadening in the car.

It's not so much all the big stuff but the small stuff that add up in the end. Don't get me started on comparing an X-type Jag to a similar Ford.

It's just not the same.

Albeit the MK V GTI is a very good car !

Audi = very nice but I also received the some very good advice...a VW Golf for the same money will probably have lower K's and actually be the better car.
I found this out in looking on the market though.

If the Audi does it for you though, then do it.
Despite the Golf getting all the praise, I let my heart win me over and am pulling the trigger on a Pug in a few weeks.
