Full Version: Illegal?

I heard the other day that it's illegal to supercharge a V8. Is this the case? If so, is it Australia wide or just Queensland? Does that mean turbocharging a V8 is also out of the question?

I'm talking modified engines here, obviously Mercedes supercharged engines are fine.

If it was, there'd be a few awesome street machines that would have to turn in their plates!

Pretty sure they haven't passed that kind of stupid law....yet....

this would be interesting to find out as my fiance has his heart set on supercharging his XR8.
Please somebody fill us in.

BULLcrap! It may need to be engineered but I know that is legal in Vic. XR8 will most probably be underbonnet so if its done right it shouldn' be a problem. Still has to meet all ADR and pollution requirements.

I imagine they are talking about blowers that stick 1m out of the bonnet
In fact, anything that sticks out of the bonnet is illegal, i.e. blower

Blown V8's used to be illegal is Aus. This was changed as many manu's began releasing them as factory items (ala merc, and quite a few others).

There is actually a legal limit in qld, i think it's 9mm, either way it's the size of a coke can on it's side anyway. If the can cant roll over the obstruction, it's a good indication of legality.

I wouldnt say everything sticking out of the bonnet is illegal...you can get permits for scoops, bug catchers, gauges etc. They're only illegal when you dont have permits.

In QLD there are two rules, one for cars under 1350kg and one for over.

For small cars with forced induction (turbo/super)the engine capacity is allowed to be 2.5 times the weight in kgs, for naturally aspirated engines it can be 4 times the weight in kgs.

For heavy cars this ratio goes up, I'm not sure exactly (have only dealt with 4/6 cyls) any engineer can tell you.

Up here in the NT there are 4 stages:
1:take your car in to MVR tell them what mods you would like to do to your car

2:they take your car for a drive with you in it and they tell you what can be done

3:this stage they tell you what needs to be done to get the engineering certificate

4:do the mod and take the car back to MVR for another drive to make sure every thing is working. then they take it back to the MVR and they get an engineer to check all the mods etc.

In Vic you can have what you want if: it doesn't obstuct your view or doesn't have sharp edges or doesn't have moving parts..

Blower belts have to be covered.

The gauges, etc is up to the copper on the day.
