Guys,

I need to create an interface/program that can be installed onto all the computers in an office and access a database (written in M$ Access) which is installed on one PC in the office.

Am I best to use C++ or VB?
I want to know what one would suit my application better so I know which software to buy and which course to do at night school.

Cheers,
Kirk

VB is much quicker to use than C++ . C++ is powerful and great when you're building a large or complex application where performance and flexibility is needed, but can be a bit over the top for small scale things.

And works wonders with MS Access - which has a form of VB scripting built in.

Why not pay someone to build it for you ?

Its a possibility Dogo.

At this stage I'm still contemplating that as an option.
BUT I feel that I should learn it any way as there are quite a few things we would like to do with having our own programs and I'd like the option to trouble shoot these programs myself as the other programs we have had written are a PITA when any thing goes wrong in them as we have to get the guy who wrote them to come out and look at them and fix the issues. (and he is a prick to deal with)

Dogo I might shoot ya a PM at some stage if we do decide to get it written by someone (such as yourself)

C++, definetly, VB is very simple and more a beginners code language, i do advise you learn and go with C++ it is widely known so you will get heaps of books and tuts to help you with that.

Or pay Dogo tongue.gif

either way good luck mate!

I got a whole lot of VB books and stuff - teach yourself in 30 days, plus all sorts of other stuff to borrow (incl. VB6 Pro CDROM if you want it)

Maybe approach a local Uni to see if a student wants a project.
It may not even cost you anything, because it will be something that they can use for assessment.

It'd be REALLY good if you could build it together.
Even if you don't understand all the coding, you'd probably be able to modify it yourself later on without help.

I hate VB, the tried to force it on us at school and it is pathetic.....C++ all the way, but I agree pay someone to do it. It saves a lot of messing around really, It is alot easier to edit code that doesn't quite work then to start fresh.

Yeah they made us learn VB at school, I dont like it much but its simple and effective. teach yourself C++ though. Its a very beneficial skill.
