When my car was first bought, it was purchased in my parents name for insurance reasons. Now, that the insurance premium has fallen for my age, theres no benefit keeping the car in my parents name. So, im looking to transfer ownership.

However, im a little confused if this is even possible. I know its possible upon the sale of a car, but is it possible when the car has not been sold ?

Before I ring the RTA and enquire, I wanted to do some research, so, I thought ill post the question here aswell.

I know my parents can "sell" the car to me, however thats not what im wanting to do. Im after a simple transfer from my fathers name, into mine.

I believe you will have to pay the same fees as if you sold it eg stamp duty and transfer fees

eg not worth it

Bugger. I thought as much. I was hoping there might of been another way around it, ie family or something.

A roadworthy would probably apply, i think the exception is you can transfer it if its sold/worth under $2000?

we transferred our sons name to a car that was registered in my name and the same transfer fees etc that apply when you buy a car also applied to us even though the car was only worth $1500 and only the first names changed as address and last name where the same. hope that helps
