Hi, I have been running a soundstream PCA2.260 with alpine spits but yesterday decided to put in a sub and thus a monoblock amp. I split all the wires from the soundstream to my new boss ba-1001(1000W max) but when i turned on the ignition, my soundsteam started glowing red and my mono was glowing blue. I can't figure out why my soundstream amp won't work but my boss amp will. I have been told that i need to run another 8 gauge wire from the battery by a friend but wondered if anyone else had any thoughts???
Thanks

ok, what size wiring are you currently running? sounds like its only small, and by splitting it, its made it worse, and teh SS is goinjg into protect because of low voltage
how did you split it? and into what guage wires?
you should be running at least 4 guage from teh battery, to a distribution block, and then at least 8 guage to each amp.

I believe the Boss has infected the SS with its incredible crapness, no doubt the soundstream caught it from sharing a wire and now is going into protect mode.

Like Trism said, give us more info about the wiring for a start. Also check out the amp troubleshooting thread in the tuts section.

I'm running 8 gauge from the battery. I took the tosses word at MOUNT GRAVATT STRATHFIELD who said it would be fine using the same wire and just to split it without a disto box. So yeah just cut into the 8 gauge before the ss and ran more 8 gauge to the mono from that.

nooo way.
that is a recepie for amplifier death.
i feel like crying after reading that.
do what i said up there^

Agreed, 4ga to distro (fused pref) to a run of 8ga to each amp. Alternatively you could quite possibly just do another run of 8ga all the way, ie, have a run for each amp.
Go to the tuts section and read for the rest of the week, it will be worth it. Start by searching the tutorials threads for "fusing" and you should get a hit with a thread that has good info about suitable wire sizes and fusing etc.

yes, but an 8ga cable isn't the reason the amplifier isn't turning on at all.
each amplifier will draw around half an amp when on, without music playing, so, if the amplifiers aren't working, something else is obviously wrong.
how have you grounded both amps?

read it again. its turning on, but its going into protect.

thats what I meant.
but either way, its got nothing to do with the fact that both amps are running off the single 8ga power cable.
more likely that one amplifier isn't grounded properly.

Arhhh the pain, i thought i could get away with not removing any trims or seats again... Ok so i guess just im going to wire another 8g from the battery.
Here's my problem for today if any of you guys still want to help me.
After doing my awesome wiring job putting in the amp and not getting it to work, i was running out of time and was meant to be on the gold coast, live in brisbane, so i disconnected the 8g cable from the battery. When i went to start the car up it just turned over, i thought i may have drained the power a bit and that was why. I drove to goldy which is a good 50mins away and turned off the car, got up to go for a surf the next day and it wouldn't turn over. So i charged up my battery a got the car started. Drove it home, tryed to start it up before an the batteries dead again. I completly disconected the power cable to the amp at the battery terminal. I know this isn't a mechanical forum but any idea on what is causing the battery to drain?

what kind of battery do you have? how old is it? anything else that youve connected to it?

Its one of the ford ones, motorcraft or something and it's just over 1 year old. I've got my cigarette lighter powering my gps. thats about all

How have you got the remote/trigger wire running to the amps? If the amps are trying to turn on all the time it could be draining the battery, the low battery voltage could be triggering the amp to go into protect mode.
I remember a guy on here a while ago who had a messy end on his power wire and a few strands were sticking out of the main bunch and somehow touching the remote terminal - effectively keeping his amps turned on 24/7.

Hey guys thanks a heap for all your help. My motorcraft battery wasn't charging from the mains so i figured it had gone to the sh*tter. I went out and bought a century performance battery with a 3 year warranty and all is good. Got the sub working, decided to run another 8 gauge cable from the battery, it was a bit of a mission ripping up everything but worth it because the sub sounds good and both amps are working. So thanks everyone that help me out, it was much appreciated!

On another note very disappointed with mount gravatt strathfield for there useless info that caused me to blow a few fuses and waste a lot of time!!!! They have lost me as a customer, thats for sure.

Good to hear problem solved, and I think the extra power run is a wise idea.
Unfortunately you have learned the hard way about installs from places like Strathfield. THEY CAN BE GOOD, but it usually seems like a hit and miss affair. Reputation is everything
