ok are you able to help with this ?
i have just configured my netgear wpn824 router and now on the net wireless with my dell inspiron 9400
now my question is that with this router am i able to share files across the network or do i need to set something up with the router

you need to make sure they're on the same 'workgroup' and then it should be very easy.

Yep should be no dramas at all.
As stated, put them in the same workgroup (Not required but makes it a lot easier) Make sure that file and print sharaing is turned on in the network properties and also make sure that the permissions on the files you want to share allow other user to view\read\write etc.
Then you can either browse through network neighbourhood or map a drive to the pc:
\\computername\share.

Just go into control panel on both PC's and go Network Setup wizard there you can set file and printer sharing to on and set the workgroup name. You can just leave the workgroup name when doing the wizard as both pc's will set the same name. Then all you have to do is right click on the HDD or Folder you want to share, go to sharing and security then click on the hyperlink looking thing (if you havent done it before) and tick the 2 bottom boxes and hit ok. Then on the other pc when you go to start then my network places it should come up. If not on the side (in My network places still) click workgroup and double click on the name of the other PC that your wanting to connect to.
