hi

i got a set of phass speakers A650 with custom made passive crossover from my friend. and this custom made passive crossover was design for camry. but now, i am planning to do put the speaker in my audi a4, would it be good that i use his custom passive crossover or i use the factory crossover? any difference between factory any custom made crossovers? or i play with active?

please help

i think you'll find they're designed for the speakers, not the car.... long story short, there is a reason custom passives cost thousands of dollars compared to a few hundred for factory replacements, know what im sayin?

Not really, if they really are a correctly designed set of passives then the speakers should have been placed in the car and measurements taken and then the passives would have been designed from there, so it's a combination, yes there for those speakers but they should also take into consideration the specific installation environment. So place them in a different environment and they may not be quite as effective at shaping the acoustic signal to suit the car, but chances are there probably better then the factory ones.

Why not just try both, leave your speaker wires hanging out somewhere and try it with either one, and see what you prefer.

Luke's right. A custom passive designed without taking full measurements inside the car is a poorly made passive.

Phase, slope, environmental interaction etc. all need to be taken into account when designing it.

You have various levels of passives, from the factory unit, through to a full blown environmentally considered custom unit. A unit designed simply for the driver is a lot closer to the 'factory' end then they are to the 'custom' end.

(Hope no-one minds me digging up an older thread, I'm trying to educate myself re custom passives)

What sorts of environmental interactions can a custom passive account for? Reflections, I guess? How exactly would a crossover compensate for reflection?

More questions...

Can a custom passive set-up incorporate time-alignment if required?

Is it better to modify a factory crossover, or to start from scratch?

Why are they so expensive? I guess it's mainly the time to design them? (Rather than simply the cost of the PCB with bits thrown on...)

Design by trial and error? Or is it more exact than that?

Who makes them? Sound engineers? Car-audio shops? Enthusiasts?

TIA!

how skilled is your installer, thats what you should be asking yourself, an installer with the right tools can do this easily, not to say it can be done in minutes, good custom passives take time, not to mention lots of you're hard earned cash to get them right smile.gif
Pulse-R
time, phase, blending (of drivers' response curve) and level are all set in the custom passive.

If you want to change something, the whole crossover may need to be redesigned. $$$$$$$$$$$$$

If you get the installation of the drivers 100% right, then you don't need a lot to get the crossover right, but it's very hard to install perfectly into a modern car without chopping the interior to bits.

if you consider a custom passive, I recommend a) pay someone to do it for you while the speakers are being installed, or b) running active until you're happy with the settings, and use this as a basis for the custom passive design.
Cyberpunky
man, just try them

someone put a $hit load o work in, so see how well what they did, works ?

acording(sp) to many ppl, our hobbie/addiction, is a waste of time becuase you can't compensate for a car's bad enviroment.

I think that they can't, because they already beleive it can't be done, so they don't try

sure this passive wasn't designed for your car, but they were designed for your speakers...

forget all the einteins here and listen...

aw come on bruce, we're not that old to still have some fun are we? smile.gif

I actually agree with Both cyberpunky and icacha - you guys are both saying the same thing, but in different ways tongue.gif you're both saying experimentation is what makes this hobby good smile.gif

I would say try the ones you have - you've got nothing to lose!! If they dont work, THEN go about seeing why wink.gif
