Full Version: What speaker options to fit MY99 WRX?

Ok i'll start by saying I havn't been around this place in years! Can I still call it C A A? lol it changes to MEA!

The last system I built, which is still going strong in my Mini, was bought when I was a struggling student... so this time round for my rex, I'm not scared of spending where it's needed. It's gotta be better than my Mini system, that's for sure! Best thing I did in that system was buy my Hertz HSK165's!

I'm sure a few of you guys out there have had experience with fitting splits in classic WRX doors, so I put it out to you guys to suggest some stuff that fits.

I don't have a budget as yet... i'll decide whether they're worth the money after I listen to them.

mate as a wrx driver i know the dramas you face. The mounting depth in the front door is about 2.5" or 62mm from memory. This narrows down your selection quite abit.

So I myself are looking at either MB Quart PCE216 or RCE216
Boston SX60? or the line above it.

You can still get good speakers but just be carefully to check the mounting depth, unless you want to use spacers.

There's a tutorial on here done by Marty at FHRX studios that goes into great detail (with pictures) how to fit almost any 6.5" driver in the front doors of a wrx I do believe. Sure it is using spacers under the trims, but apparently you can add ~18mm of depth using them, and if you space the trim a bit you can get even more. Definately broadens your options.

Edit - Here's the link

I also have a WRX, MY00 wink.gif i think if you are planning to use spacers... the maximum spacer you could fit in the door without too many hassles was a 18mm mdf spacer from memory, so that will open up your options a fair bit smile.gif The main problem being the window when it comes down, you don't want it hitting the speaker lol so always test that out... apart from that your good to go smile.gif Enjoy!

EDIT: Louie was too quick smile.gif

You can use 25mm spacers, you just need to be accurate.

I've installed Focal Utopia and even DDW6.5s in WRXs with no problems.

well there u go tongue.gif learn something new every second day...

EDIT: Phil, do you have any further details for an install in the wrx for those DDW6.5's? Im interested in how it was done and what you mean by being accurate smile.gif

Yeh the slimline Focal series fits,

165VRS (is the new 2008 model) which replaced the 165 V Slim, both RRP/RRP'd for $499.

Its a big myth that you need slimline speaker for wrx doors... I'm no pro installer and i managed to fit my rather large boston Pro6.5s straight in with no dramas using a 25mm (painted) MDF spacer. took me 10 minutes to do both sides

Please also consider decent sound deadening as WRX doors are extremely tinny and will make your speakers sound lifeless (hear the door resonating when you close it with the window down)

I've done it too Phil (Focal) shown in Marty's pics the the problem I encountered was that under cranking the roll surround does hit the trims on the old subies due to the crapty door trim design. Wouldn't want to do it on that model anytime soon... Actually I would if the customer had deep pockets tongue.gif

Daniel,

Pro's aren't as deep as the Focal's Phil has mentioned tongue.gif

There are also slim Rainbow's we sell, the X-Plain Line they are 43mm deep as I'm sure some other brands also have slim midbass drivers...

I easily fit dynaudio esotecs 242s in to a 98 impreza door with mdf spacers, not hitting at all and that is a 7" speaker and fairly deep too

was that the regular 242's or the 242gt's (slim version) because the gt's may even fit without spacers

You just need the spacer and speaker in exactly the right place. Too high it hits, too low it hits.

I routered a rebate so the speaker sat in to provide extra protection. There is also a little bit of plastic that can be relieved on the back of the door trim to provide extra clearance.

You do not need slim speakers in WRXs or Honda Euros! smile.gif

You could just buy Alpine speaker as I still think they come with the Honda mounting spacer for the DIYer's smile.gif

On further thought, and after all the info you guys have provided... I think the Mini is gunna lose a set of HSK165's.

I'll see how they go for now, before I decide exactly what I want as a front stage. I'll dig up my trusty old Cadence amp thats been in many a car to power em. It will atleast stop me from going insane with the factory junk.
