Go with 17s.. should fill the guards enough, without having to worry about getting the guards rolled so you dont have scrubbing (even though you may have scrubbing with the 17s, i dont know).
Can easily pick up 17s (with new tyres) for under $1500

your stud pattern is 4x100 (i think!)

offset would be around +40 but depends on how much you want the wheel to stick out or if you need much brake clearance or whatever.

Tyre size you're probably looking at 205/40/17 or 215/40/17...

Make sure you get good tyres! so many aftermarket wheels these days come with Nankang tyres or some other crap and from what i've heard they are barely acceptable in the dry and crapehouse in the wet.

If you're in Sydney, go Tempe Tyres.

Yep, start by looking at Tempe. www.tempetyres.com.au

Go at least 18s.

Rolling diameters:

215/40 17 = 603.8
215/35 18 = 607.7

So the radius of an 18 is only 2mm more than a 17, scrubbing won't be any more of an issue.

I think 18's would look way to over proportioned on a tiny car like a mirage, 17's would be an idea size in my opinion.
