Hi all,
I was looking to purchase a Pioneer AVIC-HD3 for my new VRX Pajero.
So far, I'm told that if I put this unit in my car that I will not be able to use the steering wheel controls (volume, mode and up/down channel).
Apparantly, the only unit these controls will work with is the Eclipse AVN 6000. This makes sense as this is the unit that Mitsubishi use in their top-end models like the Exceed. This unit seems OK but I like the extra features in the pioneer.
I have been searching the net recently and some people are talking about CANBUS interfaces. Does anyone know where I can source these from? Do they work?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

you can put a HD3 into your VRX pajero and get a second box module that will allow the steering wheel controls to be used with the HD3 unit, it'll will be like a CAT09 or CAT10 (maybe being canbus though it could be differentbut it will be from stinger), I know caused i've put same setup into a suzuki swift 07 and a holden crewman so yes you can still use steering wheel controls you just need an extra box module.
I would go with the HD3, because of hdd navigation, faster loading multiple routing and so many more features than the eclipse equivalent.

Thanks YT1987,
it wasn't easy to find a lot of info about Stinger on the web but I finally found a phone number (in another forum) and some diagrams. Do they all use an infrared connection with a box mounted on the roof (not really keen on that setup) or do some of them wire directly into the back of the HU?
Yes, I'd prefer to go with the HD3 for its features (and gadgets too!), but I just want to make sure I'll be able to get those steering wheel controls to work too.
I'll give them a call on monday.
Do you happen to know if they have a website?
Thanks again.

Thanks again,
I just found a US website that listed the same number as I found before and it looks like there's no website for them but I'll give them a call.

You need the SWI-PS from
www.pac-audio.com
The SWI-PS allows the customer to retain the use of their steering wheel or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit. Works with Pioneer and Sony radios with wired remote inputs. The SWI-PS also retains the use of heater control buttons on GM vehicles. The SWI-PS features just can't be beat.• The SWI-PS is so universal that you only need one SKU# to cover over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to current. New vehicles coming out every year? No problem! Never be stuck with a vehicle specific type interface.
• Assign the buttons on the steering wheel to any of the 9 specific Pioneer functions. Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute, Track Up, Track Down, Source, Preset Up, Preset Down and Band.
• The SWI-PS has non-volatile memory which keeps all programming in memory even if the vehicle battery is disconnected.
• The SWI-PS not only covers Ford, GM or Chrysler/Dodge but also it covers Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chysler, GMC, Harley Davidson, Honda, Hummer, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saab, Suzuki, Toyota and Volkswagan.

Thanks everyone for your help.
Looks like I'm going to go with the PAC SWI-PS. Stinger apparently won't 'guarantee' that it will work but it looks like my best option for a hardwired solution.
