I'm now looking for a new dvd player, my current one was a gigatech something, Divx playback, but, I'd never even watched a full movie on it, just had the player sitting around, and the remote control no longer controls the unit violin.gif

it controls my heater instead.... I dont know, dont ask!

so, what brands, or models are people using?

I bought a highlander, with HDMI output, only to get a nice shock from the case of the unit, which measured to be around 200+volts with respect to ground. I exchanged this for another highlander unit (I really should stop shopping at strathfields) and, the remote control didn't work rolleyes.gif so, I got a refund on that one.

so, what are people using? and what is your opinion of it?

thanks!

Some people may disagree with me but if I went shopping for a DVD player today I'd pickup a PS3. Under $700, HDMI output, blueray, oh and you could play GT5. That's if your looking to spend that much.

I'm really only looking for a DVD player here... dont need HDMI output, the cables are stupidly expensive anyway. haha

that, and I'm not into playing games.

Yeah when my DVD players sucks it, im going to get a recorder or something. One that upscales normal DVD's
Already got a ps3, but its a pain in the bum watching dvd's on it because you have to take out whatever game you're playing at the time.
Doesnt sound like much, but it annoys me. I like the game in there ready to go =)

Damn, you just slipped that in before my post =)

in that case WOW have a sony unit for 88 bucks. I'd get that if i wasnt looking for anything fancy.

I dont need a recorder, I have a digital set top recorder, just standard definition, and I never use it anyway! also have a HDTV set top box, without recorder.

Fair enough. I think i'm just in love with the look of Blueray on true hi def tv's biggrin.gif And the price you'd for a standalone blueray player would be around that or more. Buy quality once and you won't have to buy again they say. Anywhoo...

Anything you are looking for in particular? DivX? Under $xxx, around $xxx ???

I've never had any trouble with LG.
I think most of their models support DivX, with firmware updates via CD, and easy to find instructions to 'region free'.
I've never had any trouble playing ANY dvd or cd, whether it be burnt, from another region or whatever.
My mates' high end Sony, for example, won't play any 'extras'.

I work at a college and they buy LG combo units (incl. VHS) all over the place, and never have any trouble with them.
That said, they don't have any fancy options or interfaces, but that sounds like it suits you.

I'd go the Samsung DVD-1080P7. Should be able to be found for round $200.

It's got HDMI outputs, DivX and it can go both 1080i and 1080p

strathfield have a $99 sony, and a $156 with HDMI...
Sylabolic23
Lol I thought you said you were going to stop buying DVD players from strathfield... hehe jokes, anyway...

Sony's home products are pretty good i've found. Havn't seen one of their DVD players myself though. Is it 1080i & 1080p? If it is i say go for it

• HDMI output • 720p/1080i/1080p upscaling
• Bravia Theatre sync HDMI control
• HD JPEG playback • MP3/JPEG/DIVX playback

dont need HDMI, but then, my 5.1 channel amplifier does have HDMI switching, so, I could use the HDTV set top box, and the DVD player on the single HDMI input on the TV... smile.gif

Smoke em if you got em smile.gif

All this really means jack if your going to be using a 34cm CRT, but even if you are (I think your not) it'll save you buying another DVD player if you upgrade your Tv in the future

Ehh no biggie:

"HD DVD and Blu-ray content is 1080p/24. If your player outputs a 60-Hz signal (that is, one that your TV can display), the player is adding (creating) the 3:2 sequence. So, whether you output 1080i or 1080p, it is still inherently the same information. The only difference is in whether the player interlaces it and your TV deinterlaces it, or if the player just sends out the 1080p signal directly. If the TV correctly deinterlaces 1080i, then there should be no visible difference between deinterlaced 1080i and direct 1080p (even with that extra step). There is no new information—nor is there more resolution, as some people think."

So unless you are a gamer it doesn't really make a difference (at least for now)

bought the Sony DVD player...

seems rather cheap...

it has a SCART output... wtf? they went out of fashion in the 90's! and it doesn't have a VGA output like my last dvd player, and nor does it have S-video out, or full 5.1 channel (as in, inbuilt processor) all of which my cheapo dvd player had...

I bought one of these from cashies for $20
Does DivX & MP3 etc. with S-Video. does everything i need and is the simplest DVD player I've ever used.
Even @ $139 rrp its a good unit.

HDMI cables arent that expencive - under $20 gold plated ends etc. check DTV forums

yes, but compared to S-Video, VGA, or component, which will cost like $3 - $5 they are expensive!

especially if I was going to use the amplifier for the HDMI switching, which would mean that to connect two devices to the TV, I'd need three cables! tongue.gif blah!
