So i'm not satisfied with the tweeters that come with the Response splits - way too harsh for me. Is there anything decent i can replace them with for under $100/pair?. The only other requirement is that i can sit them on my dash without it looking like dogs balls (too lazy to fibreglass my A-pillars).

So basically, you want to replace the tweeters from a pair of splits that cost $150, with tweeters that cost up to $100?? :S

I'm afraid I dont see the logic. Did you audition the splits prior to purchasing them? have you adjusted the crossover point on the crossover boxes(-3dB)? Sometimes all you need to do is change the angle of the tweeters to remove the 'harshness'.

I've heard that with focal tweeters when you sit them on the dash you get a very bright, harsh sound from them. However, if you flush mount them in a small baffle, it becomes a smoother, softer sounnd. Perhaps you just need to be un-lazy and mount them properly?

yep they are on -3db but it's still too bright. I thought baffle step was pretty minimal for high frequencies?

I'm starting to think it could be mainly the fault of the crossovers because it seems that the +3dB terminal would be 0dB, the 0dB terminal is inline with one resistor to make -3dB, and -3db is inline with two resistors to make -6dB. If the impedance of the tweeter isn't constant, then a single series resistor will produce dips and spikes in the response. I'm going to try connecting it to the +3db terminal and running a -9dB L-pad to see what it sounds like.

had a look at the ribbon tweeters they now sell?

they have a new higher end split set which is 300bux with a diff mid range and a new circular ribbon tweeter these are also sold seperately.

with the mids mounted pretty solid i find the splits to be pretty nice(semi sealed door, bit of deadening, and like an mdf baffle). if ur lacking midbass as well then yes the tweets do tend to sound brighter again.

CS2339 are the new tweets on their own. $89.95 which comes in at that under 100 u were asking for.
