G'day all,

Stumbled on a decent condition old school Mobile ES amp.

its a sony moebile ES XM-7547.

Best info i've found on the web is this.

Linkies

But i thought i might get an opinion from you blokes (if anyone remembers) on how these perform / sound?

I'm after a 4 ch with enough power so i can run my 3 ways full active (or at least tri amped)

but with 75w x 4 I'm not so sure i'd see a huge difference as I'm already feeding the mids & tweets 150W x 2 from the butler.

So, my 3 fold question is.

1) What do we all think / remember of these amps
2) Appropriateness for my use?
3) So what would a decent price to pay for this baby?

Learned gurus pls advice!

Hmm, at a rough guess I'd say up to $200 maybe more, depending on condition. One thing I have noticed about the old Sony Mobile ES gear is that the HU's can get quite good money but the amps don't fetch alot although most of the ones I've seen are the earlier models which are all silver and they fetch up around $200US each. So as for this model which appears to be a later model it may be worth less, or more.

From what I've read the Mobile ES amps were considered very good and capable of very clean output, although from there era your rather spoilt for choice there were many very nice amps around that time, I've got an old baby Coustic DR series amp 2 x 50rms and it's a beautifully built amp and I paid $47 for it, yet it could probably outclass many newer amps worth 10 times or more what I paid for it.

According to AmpGuts (http://ampguts.realmofexcursion.com/Sony_XM-7547/), it's even half ohm stable on two channels.

Yeah, i asked simon to help me do a conversion instead.

Mmm.. good to see simon's brought the HU to bed...

(edited by Pulse-R, so it's still a surprise)

^^^ Was thinking that too. On the bed Simon? Come on man!

If I did that, I may as well take a vow of celibacy.
Pulse-R
It was only on the bed for initial audition and undressing. it performed very well wink.gif.

it's moved to the operating table now, as I am performing a more complex operation.. kidney transplant.

hopefully the digital juices will be flowing again before too long.

Lol,

no one make any jokes on the "creamy" sound of the HU post mod...
Pulse-R
nah, the mods done and works fantastic.
will tidy up the 'extras' tomorrow, and post it back to you smile.gif
