Hi everyone,

A friend of mine is looking to start building his first SQ Setup and doesn't know what brands are good and what to do pretty much. I'm a bit of a SPL guy so I can't comment far, but have given him a low-down of how brands advertise their products and watnot. Anyway, I was just wandering if you could point us in the right direction to what we should be looking at.

The setup will be going into a VS Commodore, and he has a budget of around $2000 I would say. He'll need a head unit, sub/s, amp, dynamat, and whatever else... He wants to enter it into Sound offs, and at least be a good contender =)

Any good setup ideas or product info would be a big help. Thanks guys (and girls)

2way fronts +single sub.
A head unit with Time Alignment,PEQ,crossover can come in handy.
Your mate could save money with smart buying now , but its only money right?, and some components that seem cheap and distasteful in the SQ forum can actually be a good starting point.

My mate is 13! And is fastidious getting it all right the first time. Doesn't mind if he has to pay more later as long as the gear is good, and he can win trophys. I don't think he wants to overhaul it, but just not the cheap nasty stuff, like $70 xplods and pioneers.

Whilst a lot of people will say it (and I used to be one), there is no such thing as getting things right the first time. If you buy more expensive, in the end, you only end up spending more money.

Buying more gear, installing more gear, tuning more gear, more often, leads to experience. With experience (hopefully) comes understanding. Therefore, buying less gear will ultimately lead to less understanding, unless you love your research.

Buy cheap first, and learn the basics. Then when you're confident you know what you are doing, jump up to the hardcore gear. Dont throw yourself in straight away, or your just burning dollars.

In that case i would suggest buying a head unit+ processor(alpine),(pioneer),(eclipse) and install it in his bedroom.
Get a nice 5 ch home audio amp, get a set of home audio midbass drivers and tweeters +sub.Run it active and use the oppertunity to build up box sizes and types.Keep testing till hes 18 and use the knowledge gained to win a MEASQ national.
