Hi

Thanks to all thous who have posted back with help on my install components selection thus far, cheers...

I've settled on the 10" driver from JL (JL 10w6v2.D4 (10" Subwoofer)), for the time being....

The strong points are that it may be utilised within a small enclosure , recommended 17L.

The many reviews I've read over that past day or two all rate it very very highly. Interesting notes are that it is readily compared to other JL subs (W7) and stated to being the better driver. Also it is readily compared to the likes of alpine Type R and X of which are sited to being under-performers once compared to the suggested JL subwoofer.

I've auditioned the Alpine gear and was reasonably impresed...

Any real world opinions preferably from owners of the driver and though whom have either moved up to or away from.

cheers all again!

Personal choices would be the new seas 10 or 12 / or the Focal 13" Be from a brief test this weekend.

First up, what are you wanting from your sub ? Ill assume that being in the SQ forum you want Quality above everything else ?

The Jl W6 has had good reviews, but, I believe is over priced in the Australian market compared to other really good products. How many subs have you listened to ? Where did you listen to them ? The best way is to audition in your own car, with the sub in the correct size enclosure.

With my (limited) experience so far in car audio, I have come to learn that quite often with subs, the box, and tunning is just as important as the driver itself. I am sure that those who hear my current setup (Infinity in a PORTED box) will be very surprised that a $200 sub, in a ported enclosure (alot of SQ heads are against ported boxes) will surprise many.

In terms of subs that I have heard that I enjoy and very good in the SQ department are Focals KX series (I am yet to hear the WX), Morels Ultimo, Hertz Mille, and the Dayton series (must be imported from the US, but is probably the best budget sub).

Oooh, you didn't sneak down to FHRX on the weekend did you Anthony? I'm keen to hear Marty's Utopia 33 WX; the 33 KX he had in there was already terrific, I'm willing to bet the Utopia sub is even more special.

Did you get a chance to audition the new Morel or IDQ subs?

I'm using a single SEAS Lotus 10" sub in my installation. It has a recommended sealed enclosure size of 20L, so small enough for a stealth enclosure, which is what I am going for. It is by all accounts a very good SQ sub, prob a bit cheaper than the JL 10" that you are looking at (RRP AU$599).

Spot on.

Your instal looked great in the flesh. I'd love to listen to it when it is fully completed. You definately have some great gear and I'm sure you'll be happy with it, esp when FHRX tune it all up for you.

Marty's Utopia soundsed great, so is that little gain controller under the wheel for the amp in blending the sub bass. I haven't heard Marty's car in a long time, so can't comment on the step up between the 33KX and the 33WX, other than price. However on the sub itself, I would highly recommend it.

I had a brief listen to the Morel and initial thoughts that it needed a bit of tuning. I wont comment on it until I have listened to it in an optimally tuned system. Bass was overpowering for me when I heard it and couldn't work out how to turn it down. What I could tell though it was a fairly good option, but as it was too loud for me, I can't really give you a true reflection on how it sounded. However on first impressions I would probably go for the focal if cost were no option.

Seas are just beautiful and I would highly recommend it, but not if your after that chest thumping bass. I think it is a smoother, rounded sub.

Cheers all again, thanks for your open and honest opinions.

not to be rude or ungrateful for your help, i don't feel that the real question was answered, rather opinions and information on other drivers were given.

cheers

I have a 13w6v2 and it is an amazing sub, it is the best sub I have heard by a long shot. My list of "SQ" subs I have heard is very short, but that did include the w7, which I also owned.

Cheers, that's the sort of feed back I'm after.

it's good to hear that an owner of a w7 prefers the w6 for SQ, very reassuring.

what was on your list?

thanks
