Dynaudio Esotar2 E650 6.5" woofers

firstly, thank you to Marty at Fhrx Studios for supplying these new drivers. his service is always courteous and prompt, and interstate delivery a breeze. good.gif

i read about these new Dynaudio drivers in a recent thread: http://www.mobileelectronics.com.au/forums...howtopic=541245

i've always been a Dyn fan, and have used their woofers for years. seeing these new models got my synapses firing! being so new, there is virtually no info on the internet, and i'll quickly admit that i've never heard them running. however, i am extremely confident they will be excellent.

their cost is not cheap, at RRP$1099 a pair (drivers only). same cost as a complete set of Dynaudio 2-way System242! so i can only expect great things. yet, high-end gear follows the laws of diminishing returns: it just costs 'so much more' for that 'little' bit extra.

the choice on the market these days is considerable. i also considered the Hybrid Audio Legatia L6 7.1" woofers, $684, and morel Supremo 6 SW, RRP$1275. no doubt, any of these would be superb, but i stuck with my Dyn loyalties for this size woofer. they will be teamed with morel Supremo Piccolo tweeters; i have dismissed the Dyn Esotar2 110 tweeters as being 'too big' (physically) for my application.

so, i look forward to installation and running these woofers. smile.gif

here's some pics, including comparisons with the Dyn MW160 and MW160GT woofers. the MW160 and E650 use a cast frame which are essentially the same (just some minor cosmetic detail difference around the mounting perimeter). my initial plan had been to use the MW160GT woofers, but their pressed-steel frame simply isn't impressive in comparison!

mmm very nice Rich!

Are they actually a smaller basket then the mw160/2?

Very nice speakers, so the 240 series has the 7" driver the 242 series has the 6.5" driver?

Hawt IMO!

the underside of the frame is exactly the same as the regular MW160/2. only the perimeter (where the screw holes are) is a bit wider in diameter.

the cones of all the drivers appears exactly the same too! so i'm very unsure why the market the MW160/2 and GT as 7" drivers. silly.gif all have an 'effective piston area' (cone surface area) of 120cm^2.

WOOOOOw .. Those speakers look sexy! Only if 6.5 can be mounted inverted. laugh.gif

They do look quite nice, well done there Richard. There is a few threads over at DIYMA with some reviews on them, that unanimously favour the units.

I'd like to see some independent testing though, because thats a mighty penny to pay for just a 7" pair!!
shiny_car
yeah, major coinage! they are valued at over twice that of the regular MW160 woofers, so i have high expectations - let's hope i'm not disappointed!

i had a look over at DIYMA a couple weeks ago; i'll have another look to see if there's more info since then, thanks.

they dont loook all that different from the standard driver, i hope they perform well. EVERY ESOTAR PRODUCT ive heard to date has been just amazing so i bet its just like all its predecessors.

for that price i think i would look at the skaaning/audiotechnology range of midbass drivers over the dyns, i have yet to hear anything better in the midbass area than the skaaning products.
shiny_car
you could be right. i'm not sure i've bought 'the best' drivers for my money, but at the same time, we all know it's not just about the components, but also the installation/tuning. i will certainly try to make the best of what i have. biggrin.gif

an overseas thread has a user who has fitted these Esotar's. and to his joy, discovered they sound as good in a 2-way system as his previous Dyn 3-way setup. i'm glad to hear it; a big reason for me to upgrade was to ensure quality midrange, now that i have 'downsized' from my previous 3-way setup. so the 'ease of installation' and SQ makes these good value...to me. well, we shall see!

i've not seen/heard the skaaning drivers. they sound great. so much choice these days!

Some sexy looking drivers - appear to be very well built from the images. Them's Esotar mids remind me of the *Supremo* mids (looks wise).

I hope they perform as good as they look - given your knowledge I've no doubt that you will get them working to your favour

Best of luck

P.s.
Is it just me, or are those tweeters WAY smaller then the old MD330 Esotars? These seem more 'Supremo' in size.

P.P.s.
That sub looks quite sexy, would be interesting to hear how it performs!!
