some people on here know about my dvd drive issues on my laptop, finaly got it out last night (one screw under the keyboard)

turns out it's not the toshiba one that i was looking at.
it's made by LG (hitachi-lg)

the model is GMA-4082N (i believe that is for OEM and the retail version is GSA)

i been having a quick search online but cant find anywhere that sells them so far.

any ideas? or anyone know of something else that will fit in?

When are you going to get yourself a proper laptop Bobby! tongue.gif j/k

Optical drives are not nesassarily manufactured by the same company as the laptop itself so not unusual at all that you have an LG drive in a Toshiba laptop.

Given it's out of warranty now a replacement drive will probably be expensive going by the prices of Toshba accessories I've just looked at.
However .... give their helpdesk a call and get a quote for a replacement drive (they have to have spare parts for your model surely) it might be cheaper than prices quoted for accessory drives.

Another option might be to check out computer recyclers or swap meets where you might find a second hand drive to suit your model.

Or what about buying an external usb DVD drive, not ideal because you loose having it onboard and portable, but dollar wise might be a good option.
enzo
mmm....link

or here maybe?

$72.60....internal

but, you might have to look into that one a bit more lol. sorry mate

first link has externals for $170 too
Fudd
rather not get an external, cant boot from USB so i cant format my HDD otherwise.
Sierra
Of course you can boot from USB!

You mean the Toshiba doesn't boot from USB??
If you connect a usb device to it .... does the boot menu (normally accessible by hotkey) not offer you an option to boot from it?
Fudd
looked into that $72 one, it's a Lite-on and looks like it will fit.

might be a go'er i thinks

nah, tried already.
no USB option with or without a USB device in.

no option in the BIOS either, and thats pretty light on the options too..

but im sure i have heard of an alternate BIOS menu on the toshy laptops..
Fudd
haha found this about my lappy

I must be going blind .... couldn't find any reference to heat

Good news if the Lite-on fits smile.gif

Disapointing that you have no USB options though sad.gif
Fudd
"Laptop runs very hot. PSPA3E model idles at around 65C for the CPU, and around 62C for the GPU. GPU reaches over 100C under heavy load. The GPU fan never seems to turn on. This appears to be fixed by running bios 2.40, not 3.30"

i have been worried about mine, one of the stickers on the base has gone brown and half come off like it's going to burn..

usually when im not using it but it's on i keep it upsidedown, alot of friends give me crap for it, but atleast if it starts cranking up the heat while sitting on the carpet it wont burn the place down

That overheating would have been a warranty job from the start .... if the fan doesn't work!!

Well ... well .... who would have thought about the USB boot thingy rolleyes.gif

*slaps Fudd on the forehead* tongue.gif
Fudd
the fan thing i think is refering to using it under linux (thats what the wiki was about)
my fan works, just not that well sad.gif

tried to get to the fan's last night to make sure they were not clogged.
spent about 45min, took out about 7million screws and still couldnt get there, there was one cable that was attached to the screen that i couldnt find anywhere to unplug it and then got frustrated so i re-assembled it all...

need myself a proper work bench though to do it and someone that wants to help and who can take over when i get crapty at it
Sierra
See if you can find a service maual online for your model lappy.
That should give you exploded views and details on how things come apart smile.gif
BillK
Fudd,

How long did it take for your DVD burner to die on your toshi?
Fudd
just over a year.

was trying to copy a porno dvd and it died, reinstalled the drivers and it worked agian for a few days then died again sad.gif

BillK
Your lucky, 2 days into having my toshi the dvd burner died.

Doesnt read or write dvd's

But it read and writes CD's lol.

The thing is i didn't get drivers with it because it was all self install.
And there was no possible way to rollback the drivers lol.

Toshiba, get better CD/DVD drives!
Fudd
and uninstalled your old drivers and d/l new drivers from the web?

what model you got?

BillK
Effort? lol.

Not sure off the top of my head. At work atm and the lump of sh!t, i mean the laptop is at home.

Will let you know when i'm home tongue.gif.

As for buying a laptop DVD burner, i'm in the same boat as you. Sorry i can't help. Thought i'd share my hate for toshiba wink.gif.

Sony Vaio 11" is on my list for the next laptop.

Bill
Fudd
ewwww keep away from the vaio
BillK
Why?

Was playing around with one the other day.

6 hour battery life, fun little things tongue.gif

And you didn't get the drive replaced under warranty??

If there's one bit of advise I can give you guys ....

The next time you buy a laptop make sure you get a 3 year warranty to go with it .... and if you can afford it .... coverage for accidental damage as well .... it could save you a lot of grief (and expense) in the future.
BillK
I have the 3 year warranty on it lol.

I'd rather they didn't replace it though, they'll just replace it with another low end one that i will kill in a day. I might just go external. Save me alot of greif
Fudd
i would get it replaced.

and as you know Allan, i didnt have a say in the warrenty with mine tongue.gif
hell, i didnt even pay for it! so $75 for a new drive and im still $2425 ahead smile.gif
BillK
=P see how we go.
Now i have to stop hijacking your thread.

On a serious note.. Any luck finding a new drive?

As long as that scorched label is the only thing that gets scorched will all the heat you've got there wink.gif
Fudd
lucky that it gets hot at the back not the front tongue.gif
pulled it apart more last night, finaly got inside after another 14billion screws and many cables that had to be disconected.

the fans etc all are clean, and working so that shouldnt effect the heat. mebbe it's just vista running on it thats working the GPU and processor harder

now, hit another hurdle.

how/can i reinstall windows from a USB?
i have a copy of TinyXP. i have a USB, i also have it so it will boot from USB but it wont work...
~Sparkles~
True fudd style - kills his burner burning a porn DVD LOL
Fudd
haha you wait till we start making it and then see what i kill!!
~Sparkles~
I thought we were keeping our gay porn racket a secret?
Fudd
yeahhhh.... kinda sounds like that now.

ok ok ok, when your directing and im staring in our own porn films, you watch me kill stuff!

and ill be quiet about the gay snuff movies..
~Sparkles~
Im sure there is laws against violence in pornography in australia
Sierra
Boy's and their gay porn ..... laugh.gif

Rob .... is the XP CD you have a bootable copy?
Is it genuine or is it a *cough* "backup" of a genuine CD?
A genuine CD will be bootable .... a copy/backup may not always be bootable.

Stick the CD into your usb drive, restart the laptop and enter the boot menu (where you can select what device to boot from, Hard Drive, CD ROM, Floppy, USB etc) Select the USB device and hit enter .... the laptop should now boot from the CD in the USB drive .... and away you go wink.gif
~Sparkles~
nah fudd is talking USB flash drive not a USB cdrom drive.

I've done this once years ago - google USB boot disc that should come up with results

Sierra
You can boot from a USB flash drive, but again it needs to be specially formatted to be bootable.
Fudd
i have
1 x TinyXP (its a striped down version)
1 x Vista Business (propper version)
~Sparkles~
man i found a wicked link for thisb last night - forgot to post it
Fudd
thanks....

hahaha
~Sparkles~
i'll check the history when im at home tonight i can probably find some info for you.
