hey guys, last night i was showing off the install in the pulsar to a couple of mates when i blew one of my soundstream spl12s, now im looking for a replacement 12" sub that goes loud and still sounds good for daily driving, i will still be using my jaycar 800WRMS amps for the moment but ill probably upgrade later and i still want to use the same box as i only just finished building it
(4 cu ft with a 150mm x 250mm port tuned to 45). im looking at under $400 each (i need 2).

So you want to run 1 SPL12 and a different sub? That's not a good idea, either get another SPL12 or only run 1 sub.

what do you mean by the box? i had it up pretty much full blast for quite a while so i think i may have fried a voice coil because it doesnt make any noise at all if i turn it on and when i try to push the cone in it jams and/or makes horrible grinding noises, im going to take it out of the box tonight and see what it looks like tho.

Would you consider a single $800 sub? Something like a DD3512, or second hand 9512/15 (there should be one or two in the FS section, always is). If you don't want to build a new box, you could go ghetto and rebuild the current box, cover the spare sub hole, add some blocks to reduce some of the internal volume. Or rebuild the front from new MDF for a single sub, add some stuff to take some volume out of the box?

Some of the blu boy crap hits pretty low around 33hz

If your into the hardstyleZzzz then go a 9515 second hand in about 4cubes net tuned to 40hz and it will smash.
DDs can play below tuning freq a little easier as they are super stiff and dont rely on loading from the enclosure as much.

louie: yeah thats not a bad idea, it may be a while before i get the new sub/subs because i gotta save some money so il have plenty of thinking time lol...
Drifte: yeah im thinking this is what killed the spl12, the 9515 is looking like a likely candidate i just gotta save up some money...
im also looking at SPL dynamics stuff as there a bit cheaper, how do they compare to the more expensive DD's in terms of price vs volume/quality of sound?

check out the forsale forums, there are always DD subs for sale
At the moment there is a 9510 with composite cone going for $500ish which is a bargain and will go very hard

Could you smell the VC burning? Sounds like it was clipped to death. When you get your new sub make sure the gains are set properly. An 800watt amp can make buck loads more power than 800watts when clipping majorly.

Khorne: i dont mind if i get new or second hand, pretty much anything thats better than what ive got now, it will probably be a while before i can get anything as i need to save some money.
1point21gigawatts: i couldnt smell burning but i was driving with the windows open so it could have just been blown out... i had the gain set to the same as when i had the 2 subs hooked up to the same amp (i now have one on each amp) so it may have been a bit high, is there audible distortion when the amp is clipping? my car rattles pretty bad still (thats the next thing i gotta fix) so i couldnt hear any distortion when i set it up but it may have been drowned out by the rattles lol. i will definitely set the gains properly on the new sub tho.
