96 - 98? Alfa Romeo 156 - Manual
generally a very good, reliable, economical car, that is 'different'.
definitely the 'manual'. avoid the sillyspeed (selespeed) like the plague; they are likely to fail as they get older, and something like the actuator will cost thousands to replace when it does.
parts wear very well. i don't think they are worse than any others. TS 2.0L and gearbox are good. front suspension bushings wear fastest of all parts it seems, but cheap to replace; manifests as a 'clunk' from the front. suspension/ride quality is 'crashy', especially if km's are over 80K on original shockers; upgraded shock absorbers are highly recommend and will make it better than original (KONI Sport/FSD, Bilstein B6).
insurance and maintenance is reasonable. but major scheduled expense is timing belt change. required at 60K or every 5 (i think) years, whatever comes first; adds about $1K atop the usual service. so if buying you MUST ensure it has been done as scheduled. if not, it is a ticking time bomb; a snapped timing belt is a disaster. BUT, if serviced as required, they are a gem of an engine. no such thing as an 'unreliable' modern alfa IF it is serviced/maintained. FSH and low km are what you want. though i drove my 156 to 160K km's and it was going very strongly, with nothing to spend when i traded it.
best service department in melbourne is with Damon (service manager) at Lance Dixon Alfa, Doncaster. if the car is serviced there, you know it'll be well looked after. other dealers are ok, but nothing special. there's a few indies around, though i'm unsure who to recommend. but worth paying the small premium to have LD service it; they include a courtesy car for you to drive around in for the day.
i am happy with alfa's, and will continue to buy/own them. i'm actually looking at another cheap, old one as a daily driver. they are good fun.
