so im selling the Toyota Paseo to a friend, so now im a hunt for a new car, so far these are what i have considered

89 - 93 Skyline R32 - GTS-T or GTS-4 - Both manual

91 - 98? Toyota Soarer 2.5L TT - Automatic

96 - 98? Alfa Romeo 156 - Manual

90 - 94 Mitsubishi Galant VR4 (turbo awd) - Manual

92? Toyota Celica GT4

94 - 98 Ford Falcon xr6

If anyone has more information about the above cars, the good the bad it would really help me out, or to chuck up some more cars to consider. No holdens thoe or v8s =] thanks guys

I was about to say he isnt gay. But the fact that he drives a Paseo at the moment doesnt rule that out.

why not a v8??

you want a peformance type of car?

what do you want in a car?
lukiez
none of the v8's really interest me, besides the au fairlane, other than that nothings really got my attention, but thats for the luxury side of things not the performance
Sierra
Obviously I'm biased so I'll say the EF/EL XR6 .... in manual if you can find one .... better economy than an auto and better to drive when you come to the twisty bits.

Oh .... and they are damn good for an SQ install wink.gif

Sierra what is the performance like compared to a normal ef/el falcon, is the engine any different or suspension ect
Sierra
The XR6 was quite a bit different to the normal EF/EL falcon 6 cylinder range.
Differences include the following.

Mechanical / Body changes:-

Different coil springs (25 mm lower ride height, 30% stiffer spring rate)

Different Suspension geometry (suspension location points different)

Thicker sway bars

Progressive rate rubber bushings

Limited Slip Diff

Lower diff ratio (3.45)

Rear Spoiler

Unique Quad Headlights in XR grill

Unique XR mags (std 15" Tickford Option 16")

Optional Tickford Body Kit

Engine changes include:-

Revised camshaft

Revised ECU

Larger diameter exhaust valves

Better flowing exhaust from the cat back

Larger Cold Air Intake

Interior changes include:-

6 dial instument panel

Unique XR deep bucket seats (Very comfortable)

Leather steering wheel

Dynamically the XR feels nothing like a normal EF/EL falcon, it corners much flatter, turns into corners much sharper and is a much nicer more precise car to drive.
At the limit the XR tends to oversteer compared to the normal falcons which understeer.

When the EF XR6 was released (1994) it was faster than any other aussie production line 6 or V8 including HSV's 185i Clubsport.
The only thing faster at the time was HSV's new 5.7 litre 215i GTS.

96 - 98? Alfa Romeo 156 - Manual

generally a very good, reliable, economical car, that is 'different'.

definitely the 'manual'. avoid the sillyspeed (selespeed) like the plague; they are likely to fail as they get older, and something like the actuator will cost thousands to replace when it does.

parts wear very well. i don't think they are worse than any others. TS 2.0L and gearbox are good. front suspension bushings wear fastest of all parts it seems, but cheap to replace; manifests as a 'clunk' from the front. suspension/ride quality is 'crashy', especially if km's are over 80K on original shockers; upgraded shock absorbers are highly recommend and will make it better than original (KONI Sport/FSD, Bilstein B6).

insurance and maintenance is reasonable. but major scheduled expense is timing belt change. required at 60K or every 5 (i think) years, whatever comes first; adds about $1K atop the usual service. so if buying you MUST ensure it has been done as scheduled. if not, it is a ticking time bomb; a snapped timing belt is a disaster. BUT, if serviced as required, they are a gem of an engine. no such thing as an 'unreliable' modern alfa IF it is serviced/maintained. FSH and low km are what you want. though i drove my 156 to 160K km's and it was going very strongly, with nothing to spend when i traded it.

best service department in melbourne is with Damon (service manager) at Lance Dixon Alfa, Doncaster. if the car is serviced there, you know it'll be well looked after. other dealers are ok, but nothing special. there's a few indies around, though i'm unsure who to recommend. but worth paying the small premium to have LD service it; they include a courtesy car for you to drive around in for the day.

i am happy with alfa's, and will continue to buy/own them. i'm actually looking at another cheap, old one as a daily driver. they are good fun.

3000GT?
RAD82
Friends from Skyline Australia club have all said the 3000gt is rubbish. East west engine makes the 2 front drive wheels useless, the rest of the car isnt much chop.

If you've gotta go mitsubishi, try a Legnum/VR-4 on. We test drove one a couple of weekends ago while a mate was looking for a car. 200kw, 4wd, twin turbo, it got up and go in a hurry. Best part though, it can still be used as a family car if need be.
