ok i have about $1000 to spend on a sub /amp / install.

I currently have:

CDA-9887

Focal 165vr <--- focal 2.75 amp

Now what would you think a nice sub would be to compliment this system.

I am heading more to the sq side of things but i want ALOT of impact lol.

Mainly tight punchy bass...alittle boom.

I was recomended a focal v1 sub...however i have no idea what they are like?

I live in WA, Perth.

Ideas people? biggrin.gif

ID MAX, Boston Acoustics G5, something expensive and sexy from focal, Treo subs, the Oz Audio subs are apparently the schnitzel, even Cadence make a good sub. Just ask Data_mine!!! rofl.gif
EXLR5
I've gone through this exercise and have settled on an Image Dynamics IDQ. This sub should pretty much fall in that price point to. smile.gif
froggy88
hmmm any idea were i can look at these Image Dynamics subs?
I live in WA, Perth tongue.gif
froggy88

Come to the WA meets, we have heaps of these different types of units for audition.
froggy88
hmm where can i find details about these meets
Louie
Check the WA Section
Damo95
seeing that you have a focal amp, look at the FP1.800 for sub bass duties...

and possibly a Focal v2 series sub, preferably the 33 (13")??
froggy88
hmmm yeh i was looking at the focal v2 sub.

What is the main diff between them?
The v1 and v2 both have the same power handling, the v1 has a slightyl higher sensititivity.

Is there any plus in getting the v2 over the v1?
froggy88
sorry another thing, i have been hearing HEAPS about ID subs, ment to be awsome.
Where the hell do i get them from in wa? sad.gif

I dont want to be ordering over the net tongue.gif
Damo95
im sure if you ring the supplier, you can find out who can sell it..

the v2 is a higher model.. and better i assume.. would it also be larger voice coil, and config..
i ran a single v2 in my VS, and running 2 of them in the senator..
froggy88
so u ran onve 13" v2?

Tell me, what was it like i mean i mostly listen to rock so the drums in the chest are essential!!!
But when im in the mood for doof doof i do want to get some boom out of it.

Can the v2 do that? Im assuming the later is a no go?
Damo95
the VS had a single 33v2... im putting 2 in the VT Senator..

it plays anything and everything with ease.. to me anyway..
played dance, rnb, and a bit of rock here and there..

ask Rattlehead about how it sounded with his cd that he played the 1 time he heard it..

mind you, im feeding 480wrms into each sub (and did that in the VS too)..
Rattlehead
I had the pleasure of listening to Damo's system one day and we played a Dream Theater song "In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1". Mike Portnoy is ...OMFG!!!!

I also got to demo some ... other music - house? rnb? dance? and there was prolly a bit more doof doof listened to than I can normally tolerate, but it shows the sub (Focal 33v2?) is more than capable of performing any kind of sub duties.

I listen to metal and the Focal sub is very high up on my list of subs I'm considering...but VC configs might get me purchasing something else if I stick with the amp I'm prolly gonna buy.

GL
froggy88
hmmm so the v2 can doof doof abit when it need too? tongue.gif

I normaly listen to rock etc but when i show it off ill crank some techno biggrin.gif

Hmm thanx for that man smile.gif
I might just get the v2 then...ill have to audition it first tongue.gif
TEGBOY
IDQ12V.3 are awesome, I love mine.

Highly recommended!

I won't comment of the Focals, as I dislike them so much, never again would I buy a Focal speaker system.
froggy88
hmm i hear so much about these ID subs..arr i wanna see one:P

too bad i cant get them over here sad.gif

Hmm well its no good that you dont like focal!!! I love thier speakers tongue.gif
Damo95
YEAH... clint's just anti-focal.... only due to personal experiences in NOT getting focal to sound good... tongue.gif

but 2 tough choices... and yes.. the IDQ's do have balls to move some air...
but i found the focal to be more "musical" (is that the word) and blends beautifully with my 1400wrms front stage.. smile.gif
froggy88
pritty sure u wanna swap you front stage with my vrs biggrin.gif
hahaha. i wish i had more money to spend but eh i hate waiting and i want bass!!!!

Hmm well im gonna go into a few audio shops and see what they recommend biggrin.gif

QUESTION: what about these SPL Dynamics subs..any good for sq?
froggy88
Also i was looking up the specs of the focal v1 and v2 subs.

v1: xmax = 7.5mm
v2: xmax = 11mm

Is that gonna make a huge diff? The v2 is like $150 more than the v1 tongue.gif
Damo95
i'd justify $150 more for the sub..

Dunno about SPL Dynamics..

Focal Australia don't even list the polyglass V1 subs anymore, IE: I'd say they are discontinued.. don't let westsides rip you by trying to flog you there junk.. (especially if it's cannington or osbourne park) And definatly ignore anything they say about prices.
take a focal pricelist with you when you go to the stores. get it at www.focalaustralia.com.au this is the most up to date. You'll be armed with the "Correct" information then.

on more than 4 occasions they have lied to me about retail prices in order not to
give a reasonable discount, because they are the sole dealers here in WA. Every person I've ever sent to their stores has had trouble sifting through the BS. And every time i go
there it's the same problem.

But then if your Albany, your dealing with Albany Car stereo and you should be ok.
it's only in perth we have this problem.

the V1's from memory are suited to ported boxes, where the V2 is suited to sealed.

I'd 100% take the V2, I've run and installed a number of them, they are nice subs, great for most things..

the 33KX is a massive improvement in musicality and accuracy, in fact its a day and night improvement, however it's twice the price at $999.00

You shouldn't be expecting your subwoofer to give you the drum kicks on it's own, this is the partially the duty of your midbass, make sure you install your midbass drivers well, and invest in them properly. Your subwoofer system is useless junk if you don't have sufficent midbass to fill in.

Ummm yeah you can, Alberts sell them. For advice on products and professional installation i can not recommend Alberts Cannington enough! they do great work and charge great prices! check out the WA forums, we have a cruise to bunbury this weekend. always looking for new members, if you aren't busy come along. great way to meet the guys and girls and have a listen to some systems and get advice without the pressure of a comp. you will also have the chance to check out some great intalls that Alberts Cannington have done for some of our members

WA Forum Linky

Check it out, would be great to see you there!

Juls...
i wanted to get a KX... but at the time, they were dual 2's only... i needed dual 4 which is why i mainly went for the v2.. and havent looked back! smile.gif
froggy88
aw too bad im fully booked this weekend tongue.gif
Shame!!!

Haha well the guys at westside cannington seem pritty good, i have always checked thier prices against the ones on the site and they have been either the same or less!

I went to alberts today and some guy tried to sell me a 1k amp hes all like "it puts out alot of power and its one ohm stable" ... do i care? its not what i want. haha oh well good to know :S

But yeh next week im gonna go to westside and audition a few subs, the focal 33v2, and a herts one the guy said it was pritty good.
Apart from that i think my sound system is complete!!!

Next time we have a cruise or a meet count me in, i only hav a pulsar mind you but hey its all good tongue.gif

Thanks guys so much ay been tons of help and as this is my first proper sound sys i wanted to do it properly.
I will keep you all updated and tell you how it goes!!

Cheers biggrin.gif

Thats ok, a pulsar may be a wussy car tongue.gif but they have the potential to get loud
Damo95

tis true, doesn't matter what car you have. i was just having fun. i can't really talk, i have a corolla tongue.gif which i love to peices!
froggy88
haha yeh i know tongue.gif

i cant wait to get this sub biggrin.gif

oo another question:P
How long does ti take to break in a sub...im assuming the same time for most speakers???

Also will it make a big diff?

EDIT: I think that the herts sub was a HX 300 (i think)
froggy88
Ok well...

OMG I GOT IT INSTALLED TODAY biggrin.gif:D:D

haha i ended up getting the focal 33v2 and a alpine MRP-M850 amp (they sold my 650 by accident so i got the 850 for like 50 buks more).

All i can say is..WOW. Its exactly what i want in a sub...tight punch bass...no boom biggrin.gif
Hmm now a question.

As for breaking it in, how long does this take? ATM i have the voume at 10 - 12 on the HU and bass level at 5 (out of 15)
Now my mirrors are shaking, the glass not the whole thing however i noticed that with the actual sub, i can hear...'clicking' when it hits, is this normal? Is it because its just new and needs time to break in??
I dont want to kill it sad.gif haha tongue.gif
keepitreal07
when can i c it in person would love to hear it mate
froggy88
haha well i gota break it in b4 i can really giv it some power.
See wat its like then biggrin.gif

I think ill end up turnin the bass level down wen i have it loud...will c tho :|
Damo95
wise choice.... wink.gif
