Full Version: Under Dash Sub

MrMally
Its been a while since i could go on this site properlly, (no more access at work and went over download limit at home so it to slow).

Anyway i think i can make a home for a 10" sub behind the botom panel of my dash, (the sub box will become the new dash panel). i can easily make a box with an external volume ( including the box walls) of 1040 cubic inches. but next to the deck there is a large amount of area opened up wich could get up to 8 inch depth.

the problem is that i think mdf will be to heavy and difficult to get to that shape, and it would be too messy with fibre glass, because ill be fibreglassing the top of the boxand there is alot of wiring and loose material (sound deadening material).

1st up what else could i make the walls of the box with, im thinking a thin light materia' like the plaster card used for modeling and then reinforcing it with fibre glass, would this work or would it be to light?

2nd question is, what sub could i use. i was thinking of maybe the dd 1510, i like the specks but not sure where i can audition one. But im worried about the weight because the sub will be facing the floor and it would be to heavy to try and support.

So what im asking for is some suggestions for materials to use? wat sub i could use? and if you think that i could actually get it to work.

also if having the sub there would damage my head unit?

Thank you
DD Phil

Maybe also consider an 8" or lighter 10"?

If you're after an audition on a wide variety of DD woofers and speakers, pay a visit to Alberts Car Stereo in Cannington. Mention to the guys there who you are and they will look after you. They also do lots of custom fabrication if you need help with that.

That is pretty close to your HU, it may cause issues with skipping etc but it probably depends a lot on the HU as well. Can you bolt a brace to the floorsomehow to support the box?

As far as construction I think FG is really the best option. Maybe try forming the shape with thin MDF first and a bit of hot glue/liquid nails or something and then glassing the inside of the box to get the strength required. That way you can do the FG work outside of the car.

What car?

If you intended to fix the box to the underside of your dash, expect it to rattle the bejesus out of anything in/on it. Including clips if its an old dash.

My tip.

Find another spot.

The trick to what ever way you build it, is to make sure it is dead & bolted down, I can't stress that enough. The less the box can move, the better.
A cobination off MDF & fibreglass will eventually be necessary for construction. A 8" sub that close will be loud and will shake you plenty.
As per DDPhil a 8" is a better solution.

damon has a suitable sub for sale in one of his current FS threads

maybe go the 510 if you are keen on the 10" its a little less heavy than the 15 series
