Hey guys,
Just chasing confirmation, I'm in the process of putting my new system togeather...
What is the ruling on alternators?? I've been told that it must be a factory option alternator, eg if hyundai never released a car with a 120amp alt then i canot have one on my car... I've just reread the rules for the 1000nt time but i cannot see it in the rules.. I know i cannot charge at more than 14.4 and i must have 1 only...
BTW i'm looking at street A
Cheers

You can't run the engine so it's all a bit academic anyhow.

I dont think it would matter as the car is off when it is burped in street classes, the bigger alt will only help with recharging batteries between runs (if your not using a battery charger) and when your out on the street cruising with the system cranking, you see guys over in the states put bigger alts on because their running a 16 volt system and there in super street classes where the engine can be running when you burp it.

I will be running a bigger batt of some sort (still deciding) from what i've been told you need a higher charge rate to keep them good, I will have a charger for comps. I just don't want to spend 400 bucks adapting an alt then get knocked back in scruitineering.... the rattler only has a 70amp but only charges at 13.5v so needs to be replaced just want to keep it legal..

theres no rules about alternators in normal street classes because as said the car has to be off when competing anyway.
as for street classes you can charge your 12volt battery as high as 16volts if you like so long as when the charger is off your 12volt battery doesnt read more the 14.4v at float voltage.
my old 2150's use to charge upto 16.5volts and float at 14.2 when off the charger. and that was in street max where all the battery rules that apply to street classes apply to street max classes aswell.
its like for Super street we arent allowed to use more then 18volts. but my batteries charge upto 19.3volts and float at 18.1volts. yet when i switch my amps on they go below 18volts. so then it becomes all good and legal.
so to answer ya question, yes you can do what you like with the alternator and put a 200amp one in if you like even. as when your competing the car is off anyway.

if you read the rules engine speed must not exceed 2000 rpm

But were looking at street classes where engine must be off... So my idle could be 4000 and it wouldn't matter??

dB Drag is 2000rpm maximum regardless of class, but not sure on BassRace. When you drive on the road, just use the lowest possible gear for max RPM

That's what I do, plus it helps lugging 2 extra tonne with a 4pegger

I know streetmaster do a 200amp alternator, suited to american motors. Is there a 160-200amp upgrade available in australia to suit commodores V6? cheers John.

commodore V6 is a Buick engine, so there should be a compatible unit.

As long as the stock alternator is working to spec, it will be more than enough for driving.
For charging a battery between runs, a decent charger is a better (and cheaper) option.

I'm just hearing lots of stories about odysey batts dieing in daily driven cars because charge rate off alt is not enough to look after them correctly...

They die anyhow.
I haven't had the best experiences with them. Overall I'd say 30% die prematurely.
Do I use them, yes, they kick ass, but......
