No, I'm not taking anything, just wondering if anyone's heard of using steel wool to clean chrome bumpers, et c? Dad told me some bloke swore by it, but I should think it would just create swirly scratches at best, so have never tried.

I've also heard Windex and newspapers for glass, and that seemd to work fine.

So, anyway, would there be any truth behind the former, and does anyone have any other hair-brained methods of car care that actually work?

i would use autosol and alot of rags.

I think steel wool would make fine scratches in the chrome personally, but you could always try it somewhere that won't be seen.

Yeah its fine as long as the chroming is good and your using a fine steel wool not a course steel wire.

I used this method to get overspray off my GTS wheels when I painted the black back in after having the centres welded into new (bigger) rims and having them chromed.

I also used to do this to my litte chrome pushie when i was a kid - that bike was AWESOME!

I have used steel wool on my Lowenharts for 4 years.
Brings them up really well. Its not the heavy steel wool, rather the fine weave type.
But only use it on good chrome and on good chromed wheels and never ever on other bits like chromed plastic centre caps.

Also really good on glass. Very good for getting rid of the overspray.

I think some people use aluminium foil and some liquid with it (vinegar? lol), that apparently works for polishing chrome.

^ I've heard of that before too.

Dunno if it was vinegar though?

Also for small parts - toothpaste.

Cool. Thanks for confirming that it's not just my crazy dad and his crazy late cousin.
Just like music
I'd never use steel wool -.-

What can't be removed from chome with a green chux scourer?

x2. Works great on alloy too.

use AJAX (the really fine steel wool sometimes has extra soap in it) on chrome, removes almost everything you need off it, then hit it with AUTOSOL to bring the shine.
